Sand Speeders

Those things are quick enough to cover twice the distance of a horse... if you can get them working that is.
  • A local of Homestead explains the pros and cons of Sand Speeders to a group from Garnet.
Sand Speeders are magically charged vehicles created in Kaechaek from the dreams of speed and nightmares of pursuit... making them ever so slightly 'alive'. They are a relatively recent invention by a Peridotan scientist in Garnet who was killed by a Venator soon after.   Sand Speeders are used to move across the deserts and hot climates of Kaechaek at speed. However, they are fragile pieces of equipment that can be easily broken in the wrong circumstances.   Much of a sandspeeder would not work in the normal magical and physical rules of Namarie, but in Kaechaek, that initial dream by an artificer has been taken and turned into a superstitious belief by the people of Kaechaek, as a result, many sand speeders vary in their appearance but must have the following:
  • A metal chassis.
  • A spell engine similar to what is found on Ice-Crossers to be charged for movement.
  • At least 1 seat, a maximum of 4.
  • 2-8 wheels or Ice Crosser tracks to use for movement.
  • A wheel or reins for control of movement
  • A feasible construction that connects all of these facets.
Mechanics of Sand Speeders: Sand speeders use a mixture of magic, technology and the users willpower to move.   When trying to power a sandspeeder, an individual must cast a spell slot into it, at which point the sand speeder can run for a number of hours equal to that users spell slot+their spellcasting ability modifier, showing the potency of their mental power... this is a key difference to Ice-Crossers that simply require a single spell slot for 24 hours of movement.   A sandspeeders movement requires a mental ability check from the driver, either wisdom to show their willpower, charisma for their confidence in the sandspeeder or intelligence to show how well the driver can justify the construction of the sandspeeder. The following checks determine movement speed for the duration of the time the sandspeeder is working:
  • 1-5 (including critical fails)- The SandSpeeder does not work for the duration of it's engine being powered due to the mental fragility of the driver.
  • 6-10- The sandspeeder moves 10ft every six seconds for the duration of it's engine being powered. The ride is rough awkward and unreliable, attachments on the sandspeeder do not work at this point.
  • 11-16- The sandspeeder moves 30ft every six seconds for the duration of it;s engine being powered. The ride is smooth and reliable and attachments work perfectly.
  • 17-21- The sandspeeder moves 60ft every six seconds for the duration of it's engine being powered. The ride almost feels like flight, attachments work more effectively, offering checks with them.
  • 22-25- The sandspeeder moves 90ft every six seconds for the duration of it's engine being powered. The ride feels like flight and ignores all terrain difficulties.
  • 26+ (including critical success)- The sandspeeder moves 120ft every six seconds for the duration of it's engine being powered. The ride becomes capable of flight.
SAND SPEEDERS GENERALLY COST BETWEEN 450 AND 2500 GOLD PIECES!

Utility

Sand speeders are generally seen as a potentially reliable method of transportation through Kaechaek in the middle and south.
Access & Availability
Sand Speeders are relatively common in Kaechaek but are seen as not as reliable as moving or using horses as they rely on the mental power of the user.
Complexity
Sand Speeders are both simple in their design but also unspeakably complex in the many mental facets required to use them.
Discovery
Sand Speeders were dreamed up by a Peridotan scientist who dreamt of racing and had following nightmares of being chased, in that moment of inspiration, he invented sand speeders and used it to combat his constant dreams and nightmares... he made the blueprints and methods public in the hope that the Venator would take mercy on him... they did not.
