Veilcasting Tradition / Ritual in Nailara | World Anvil

Veilcasting

Veils are an incredibly powerful form of enchantment magic that can enforce a near complete control over a creature. Masters of this magic are called veilcasters.   Rather than dominating a creature and suppressing their ability to act, veils are able to effectively alter all information a creature processes. The things they see, hear, and even their memories. A false life of decades of loyally serving the veilcaster can be implanted in moments, and a target could turn on their friends without a second thought. There seems to be no limit to how many people can be affected.   Luckily, veilcasters is exceedingly rare and the art is incredibly difficult to learn. Most masters of the art can only perfect a single veil, though they tend to be master spellcasters even without the use of veils.

History

It is unclear exactly how old the art of veilcasting is, but estimates place it expanding in modern day Kehjia during the late 3700s EC. Some earlier accounts of mortals using magic that appears very similar to veilcasting can be found as far back as 3400 EC.   In the early 3800s, following the instability caused by the appearance of the Ash, veilcasters began to surge in power. Though many of their veils were basic compared to modern day iterations, veilcasting warlords caused massive chaos in Kehjia. Coups became a relatively common occurrence, and the Kehjian royalty was soon killed off and forgotten by the commoners of the nation.   So thoroughly did veilcasters take over the nation that modern day Kehjia looks almost nothing like it once did. Grand old structures were lost during the fighting, and old traditions and ways of life were replaced by whatever would protect from the dangers of enchantment magic. Nowadays, many Kehjians possess a near crippling fear outsiders. Though veilcasters have dwindled in numbers, enchantment magic has dominated the region ever since.

Execution

Due to the secrecy surrounding veilcasting and its rarity, the exact nature and methodology of veilcasting is not fully understood. However, over the course of its existence, a few things have widely become accepted as fact.
Veils can be cast during seemingly normal conversation.   Veils are only detectable a short while after they are cast. They may last much longer.   The more intrusive the effect, the faster it wears off.   Truesight counteracts veils, but does not remove them.   Veils are difficult to create, and even masters only ever learn one.   Veilcasters are resistant to veils.
