Hell

Hell is one of the most dreaded planes of the Abyss. Over the course of the demonic war that has touched hundreds of planes, and stretched over thousands of years, no truce or treaty has lasted as long as what is known among mortals as the Treaty of Bloodshed. In it, the demon primacies Lumex, Vorozol, Astratha, and Sor'zaa agreed to divvy the plane evenly among them in order to take advantage of the unique properties of the plane.   A minor and unimportant location in the grand scheme of the war, Hell has become so well known due to the unique properties it holds: time tends to travel very quickly in relation to other planes, and the plane passively amplifies pain, anguish, and despair. It has become the most popular place for demons to send their most despised enemies, dooming them to suffer for what feels like an eternity while being subjected to the worst horrors demonic minds can conjure.

Localized Phenomena

Hell amplifies pain, in all of its forms. Physical anguish can feel many times more intense, and thoughts of regret, shame, and despair worm their way into even the strongest of minds. Memories of these things tend to linger only as long as they need to so none can truly acclimate to them. Demonic mages have found ways of intensifying this ambient effect, creating chambers where a simple pinprick could make a man scream until his throat bled.   Tied to this ambient amplification effect is the erratic flow of time in Hell. Compared to most other planes, time in Hell feels like it flows much faster. What feels like an hour in hell could be only fifteen minutes outside. In almost all cases, the faster the passage of time, the more painful the ambient effect. The deepest pits of hell are the most intense, where one might experience a thousand days over the span of a few hours on the material plane.

History

It is believed that Hell was deemed an incredibly unimportant plane in the Abyss for many hundreds of years. It laid out of the way of planes with more desirable connections to other locations, and had no valuable resources on its own. Sor'zaa's forces are said to have first discovered the pain amplification properties of the plane, and quickly gained a foothold. As news spread of the horrors her forces subjected her prisoners to, Sor'zaa's siblings began to pay attention to it.   Fighting over the plane began, but the plane's unpredictable temporal anomalies often rendered battles over in a matter of minutes with entire armies destroyed. After a great length of time in which innumerable demons were slain on all sides, Sor'zaa approached her sister Astratha with a proposition. They would join forces against Lumex and Vorozol, and each take advantage of the plane's properties. Lumex and Vorozol quickly allied as well, and fighting continued.   It was the demonic prime Arvok who approached with the Treaty of Bloodshed, as it is now known. Using powerful magic, he bound each of them to their word and split the plane evenly among them. In payment, a small number of his own forces would be allowed through the plane as they wished. Since the treaty, fighting ceased save for minor skirmishing in the no-mans-land between each of their citadels.

Tourism

No one would willingly go to Hell, demon or mortal, unless they were the ones doing the torturing. Even then, only the most steadfast of demons can be employed there - those with weak wills succumb to the dangers of the plane just as mortals do.
