Batu (Baa-too)

The Curator

Batu is a God associated with trade, curation, and artifacts. He is worshipped primarily by merchants, bankers, and dragons. Most stories about Batu revolve around his collection of rare and missing artifacts, and the lengthy chains of trade he did to acquire them.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Batu's divine symbols tend to be very symmetrical and detailed geometric shapes made of many discrete parts. Many of these symbols fit together into a larger whole. Other signs of Batu's influence include inexplicably organized objects - such as a misordered book falling from a shelf, or a bag of coins being neatly separated between denominations.

Tenets of Faith

Most who adhere to Batu's ideals believe that trade is a method of ordering the world - ensuring things are where they need to be, and that the wheels of trade continue turning. In an ideal trade, both parties receive something that furthers their goals and desires, and leads to further trade in the future.   Though Batu's love of collecting is well known, most make a distinction between collecting and hoarding. A true appreciation and willingness to trade is critical, lest you simply jealously guard possessions to prevent others from having them. This makes Batu an incredibly divisive figure among draconic society, with some dragons embracing the careful curation of the god. Others simply hoard whatever is considered most valuable.   Batu's ideals also come in frequent conflict with the demon god of greed Saggon, whose methods overwhelmingly aid one party to the detriment of the other.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

It is believed that Batu's ultimate goal is to perfectly curate the universe, dividing it into discrete and stable portions, thus creating a variety of unique utopias. Some have attempted to imitate this, forming small planned communities and societies hidden away from the outside world. To this end, many worshippers of Batu tend to be quick to acknowledge cultural differences, and perhaps a bit too quick to attempt to "sort" people into their respective places.

Personal history

Writing about Batu stretches back far into the past. The oldest story of Batu, and one that has had many different iterations, is his attempt to trade with the goddess of battle Suriel for the sun Bael. Suriel, dedicated to protecting the sun for its aid in destroying Tazan, the Ravenous One, rejected all of his increasingly decadent offers. When Batu persisted, Suriel told him that if he should gather the slivers of Baelorn and protect them for one thousand years, she would accept his aid in defending the star. Since that day, Batu has collected the many shattered fragments of the legendary weapon.   The story tends to be read as an allegory for compromise, trust, and that not everything is simply a matter of offered wealth.
