Draconic Culture

Draconic society across the world shares many similarities, especially when speaking about 'True' Dragons, whose long life and wings allow them to interact and travel over much farther distances than other species. Other types of dragonkin tend towards more individualistic lives, and take part in these structures less frequently.   Draconic society is fairly solitary and most dragons spend the majority of their lives tending their own territories far from other dragons. Gatherings occur to allow individuals of a region to discuss important matters, find mates, or make deals. Younger dragons are often more social and open to working together - generally in hopes of finding a way to carve out their own territory.

Interactions with Mortals

Dragons are known to interact with mortals to further their goals in a variety of ways. Some subjugate, others aid, and some walk amongst them completely secretly. In almost all circumstances, it is to further their own goals - which may actually be to help the mortals. These interactions are often odd from a mortal's point of view - they can feel detached even when altruistic, or frighteningly violent with little emotion.

A relatively common theme in modern bardic stories is the 'dragon romance' novel - tawdry novels written for those wishing for a more interesting life. Despite the generally low opinion they receive, the concept has staying power thanks to the rare cases it happens in reality. Most of the novels revolve around a shapeshifted dragon becoming enamored with a mortal, falling in love, and starting a life with them.   With no worries about ceding territories or long term obligations they might face in a relationship with another dragon, the pairings have some allure in draconic society. They are mostly seen as entertainment and distraction in the same way a mortal might view a particularly long vacation. Those that spend too much of their attention on these distractions are looked down upon quite severely.

Bloodlines

Despite the focus on the individual, draconic society is keenly focused on ancestry as well. Mating rituals often consist of long recitations of ones ancestry, and the great or terrible deeds done by those in their bloodline. These stories are often the key factor in deciding a partner, in hopes of having a similarly strong child.   Dragons keep meticulous track of their ancestry as a result, and can often recite full biographies of ancestors thousands of years separate from their own lives. Most individuals take great pride in the 'founder' of their bloodline and seek to emulate them. Draconic scholars can sometimes predict the personality types of dragons if given their ancestry simply due to this fact.   Dragons who disagree with their bloodline's ideals, or seek to create their own story sometimes forsake their bloodline and start anew.
You can't predict a dragon's personality or desires based on their appearance or scale color - but if you can learn about their ancestry, and the stories they proudly tell, you may be able to make an educated guess.
Notably, many dragons seem to care little whether an ancestor's deeds were benevolent or cruel despite their own inclinations. A tyrant is as impressive as a valiant protector - if one can survive having created so many enemies, their offspring will be able to fend for themselves and accomplish whatever they please.

Kaphrix - Kaphrix was known for his strength, and subjugation of a humanoid nation for well over 300 years during roughly 500 BEC to 800 BEC.

Mating Habits

Mortals have remained fascinated with dragonkin for thousands of years, worshipping them for their strength, seeking them out for wisdom, and cowering from their tyranny. But, for nearly as long, there has been an odd fascination with dragons and their ability to intermingle with a vast array of different species. Half-dragons exist across many different species - humanoid and non-humanoid alike. Long lived and often blessed with powers from their draconic parent, having such a child is a desirable thing in many cultures. As such, quite a bit ends up being known about the mating habits of dragonkin.   Dragons are capable of controlling when they are capable of producing heirs, which may have been a contributing factor to draconic culture's obsession with perfecting their lineage. It is said that sex between dragons often lasts several days.
