The individual who serves as the highest political figure in the Assembly of Asteria is known as the Holy Aster (*Think Pope, Dalai Lama, perhaps even a messiah such as Jesus or Mohammed). This individual serves as the intermediary for worshippers and the Hallowed Union, an alliance of gods across the good and neutral spectrum that have historically defended mortals against other divine interference.
The Aster is quite possibly the most powerful individual in the world, both in the political scene and in actual ability. There are very few times this is not true, such as after a new Aster is chosen. Ability is not an actual requirement to become one of the Anointed (those that have gained favor from all deities of the Assembly), it is more a natural outcome. Understand the Aster holds the power to both begin and end holy wars with a few simple words. His/her word is gospel, and it is widely believed it is the only person in the world that could issue a direct order to the Kaiser of Tor, and expect it to be obeyed.
To become even a candidate in waiting, one must be extremely devout with a great sense of the good peoples of the world and their struggle. They must travel the world and gain wisdom, experience hardship, and gain the blessing of every deity represented in the Assembly of Asteria. This is the rite of passage known as becoming Anointed. Only one Anointed will be chosen to become The Aster upon the passing the previous.

The closest rank in other organizations would be Emperor, King, etc., ruling by divine right; however, it is extremely important to note that while one may be able to actually dispute divine right with those rulers, even those with thousands of years of succession, there is no way to dispute the Holy Aster's legitimacy of power over their followers. They are literally acknowledged and blessed by every single one of Hallowed Union.
