Seamus O'Malley Character in Munson, NY: The Most Haunted Square Mile in the US | World Anvil

Seamus O'Malley

PERSONALITY IN A NUTSHELL

Seamus O'Malley is 100% convinced in the non-existance of the supernatural. When he is, inevitably, confronted with a real supernatural creature, he would begin with mocking what he believes to be another host (goading a ghost to haunt him, for instance).

PRIMARY TRAITS

Skeptical, Stubborn

UPBRINGING

Seamus O'Malley was born to two Irish-American immigrants - his mother and father fled Ireland during the start of the Irish Famine in 1845, coming to New York to work on the new canals. Seamus is the eldest of four children - two brothers and a sister - and though his family was never particularly wealthy, they ate well enough and they were happy. Seamus is doing the best out of his siblings, and sends some money home to his parents, when he can. He still very much loves his family, even if he occasionally gets into sibling spats.

CAREER

Seamus O'Malley found a rocky start when he began work as a private investigator - not many wanted to hire an Irish-American investigator when there were other names in the game. Thus, Seamus had to settle for lesser jobs, doing whatever work he could get. As the Spiritualist movement continued to grow, he ended up working on many "supernatural" cases, all of which he was able to debunk. Seamus quickly gained a bit of a reputation as an investigator who could disprove the supernatural, and enjoy a minor celebrity status in his niche. He enjoys the work, as he doesn't believe in the supernatural, and sees his work as spreading better understanding among those who he considers misguided.

BELIEFS

Though Seamus's family are all staunchly Catholic, and he does participate in the ceremony and culture of Catholicism, he holds no belief in the supernatural elements of faith. He openly voices his disbelief for spirituality and the occult, and has made his name off of proving them to be false.

MOTIVATIONS

  • Recognition - To gain approval, social status, or fame: Seamus is a minor celebrity in the field of occult investigation, and he wants to continue his growing notoriety. He has come to Munson in pursuit of the "supernatural" and he seeks to put such rumors to bed once and for all.
  • Discovery/Adventure - To explore, uncover mysteries, and pioneer: Seamus has a single case he's never been able to solve - a missing girl whose doll he still has (his memento). Her case has led him to Munson, and though he maintains appearances of being here in Munson to unveil another supposed occult mystery, he has a burning need to find this girl and settle her case.

FAST FACTS

  • Accomplishment most proud of: A case he was working on, regarding a supposed "murder by poltergeist", he was able to prove to be no more than a spiritual cover-up for a more mundane crime. This was the case that launched him into minor celebrity status.
  • Most ashamed about: Seamus picked on his sister quite a bit when he was younger. Though they talk now, he still feels that she harbors resentment towards him. He does his best to try and keep a gentlemanly professionalism around him.
  • Fears more than anything: Seamus fears irrelevance - of dying and having no one remember your name or your story.
  • Secrets kept: Seamus keeps his unsolved case as secret as he can. In addition, Seamus keeps most of his personal life as secret as he can, having effectively created a bit of a persona out of his investigative work. When most look at the famous O'Malley, they see a gentile investigator, sharp of mind and dedicated to unearthing the truth behind the occult. What they do not see is a man who returns home after work to an empty house, who overworks himself to fill an unquiet mind, and a man who chides himself for not calling home more often.
  • Last time they wept: Seamus last cried a bit over a month ago, primarily due to a combination of stress from overworking himself on a case, and a lack of friends or paramours to help him confront his own worries.

RELATIONS

  • Friends: Seamus has few who he could consider friends - and among those he could, almost all are "work friends", allies and confidants he regularly turns to in case. Of these, most would describe him in the same way he intentionally presents himself - professional, composed, logical and skeptical of the supernatural. Seamus has a single man he could consider a non-work friend - a formerly homeless man named Peers. Peers lent Seamus invaluable assistance during one his cases, and Seamus offered him drinks after the case. Drinks became amiable conversation, amiable conversation became recurring meetings, and eventually Peers became someone Seamus could trust. Peers currently resides with Seamus at his house, taking care of the house while Seamus is out of town in exchange for a place to stay while he gets back on his feet. Peers is the only one who knows of all of the doubts, worries, regrets and failure behind Seamus's investigative identity.
  • Romance: Seamus has only had a single relationship in the past, which ended due to Seamus's over-dedication to his work and need for recognition. Seamus has since intentionally avoided pursuing any further romantic relationships
  • Role Model: Seamus went through a phase as most children do when they see their father as perfect, and able to do anything. Seamus never really grew out of that phase. His view of his father was tempered a bit, and he acknowledges that his father is not a perfect man, but he still adores his father, and thinks of him whenever he needs guidance.

MEMENTO

Seamus's memento is a handmade doll, stuffed with straw. It was originally owned by a young girl who went missing under suspicious circumstances. Seamus keeps the doll on him at all times, vowing to keep it on his person until he can give it back to the girl.

ADVANTAGE

Seamus's advantage is his hell-bent determination (or stubbornness) to find this missing girl. Seamus has a burning need to find this girl, and will sacrifice his health, his possessions, and his status to do so. Using this advantage represents Seamus's desires overriding his normal logical calculations, leading to him doing something he wouldn't normally do, and it paying out.

EQUIPMENT

Magnifying Glass and Binoculars - for investigating near and far Revolver - Kept for self-defense, and though Seamus knows how to use it, he prefers not to.

History

Seamus seems to have an amusing predisposition of trying to disprove the existence of the monsters. I've heard a thing or two about his mysteries in the papers, and having the chance to tell him a thing or two felt wonderful. I didn't change his mind, but I had a good time trying.
