Hearthaven
Overview
Nestled near the heart of Mordonia, Hearthaven is a bustling adventurer's hub, its central location earning it both strategic importance and its evocative name. Originally established as a makeshift garrison during a long-forgotten war, the town has since evolved into a vibrant community where heroes gather, quests begin, and legends are forged. A modest patchwork of wooden homes and bespoke buildings gives Hearthaven a rugged charm, each structure reflecting the eclectic tastes and histories of its adventurous residents. The town sits along the winding Aortic River, which flows eastward into the mystical expanse of la Flore de Secrets and westward into the vast Bay of Antiquity. Hearthaven’s skyline is modest but distinct, marked by two tall guard towers stationed to the northwest and southeast, vigilant sentinels from a bygone era. At the town’s edge lies the town guards' training grounds, its it's fenced borders sometimes serving as an impromptu arena where adventurers engage in both friendly duels and grudge matches beneath the open sky. While Hearthaven may appear small, its reputation looms large. Permanent residency within its borders is a coveted honor, typically granted only through formal invitation by a council member. As a result, its regular denizens are often seasoned warriors, renowned heroes, and formidable spellcasters, each with their own ambitions and tales to tell.Points of interest
Rusted Blade Public House
At the heart of Hearthaven lies the Rusted Blade Public House, the town’s most iconic establishment. Once a sprawling plantation house, this three-story structure has been transformed into a lively tavern and inn, serving as both a refuge for weary travelers and the social nucleus for local adventurers. Constructed from rich mahogany sourced from la Flore de Secrets, the building’s dark timber and black-painted roof exude a rustic elegance. Flower boxes adorn the first-floor windows, while shutters frame those above, adding to its lived-in charm. Stepping into the tavern, visitors are greeted by a sprawling dining hall filled with mismatched tables collected over the years. Against the left wall stands the well-worn bar, typically manned by a duo of bartenders, with additional waitstaff bustling during busy evenings. The interior is simple yet inviting, its wooden walls adorned with an eclectic array of trophies, weapons, and relics—mementos of the countless adventurers who’ve passed through the Rusted Blade, each item a silent testament to battles fought and victories won. The heartbeat of the Rusted Blade is "Mama", the tavern’s formidable matron and main bartender. Her booming voice and infectious laughter set the tone for the lively atmosphere, as she commands both the room and her staff with equal parts warmth and authority. Her husband, affectionately known as "Papa", helms the kitchen with culinary prowess, his dishes often receiving raucous praise from satisfied patrons. Together, they create an environment that feels both welcoming and wild—a perfect reflection of Hearthaven itself. Supporting the dynamic duo is a colorful crew: Pietro, a plucky kobold apprentice barkeep eager to prove his worth; Ultumil, a sarcastic half-elf with a not-so-friendly attitude, and Dorlia, a fiery tiefling whose jovial nature matches her obsession with adventurers and their stories. Whether sharing tales over a tankard or planning the next great expedition, adventurers find camaraderie and comfort within the walls of the Rusted Blade—a true hearth in the heart of Mordonia.Underslayer’s Swordstock
Perched on the town’s outskirts, built into a functional watermill, the Underslayer’s Swordstock is Hearthaven’s sole forge. From the outside, it’s unassuming—a white wooden structure with a salmon-colored roof and a large waterwheel dipping into the Aortic River. But step inside, and it transforms into a sanctuary for craftsmanship: iron-lined walls, rows of weapons and armor, enchanted trinkets, and the rhythmic clang of metal on anvil. The forge is run by Brytnyss Graveblade, a Duergar smith hailing from the depths of the Sunken Wastes. Her sarcasm is as sharp as her blades, and her reputation for crafting some of the finest weapons in the kingdom is unmatched. While many of her kin are viewed with suspicion, Brytnyss is a beloved figure in Hearthaven—always ready to share gossip over the roar of her forge.Field of Worth
The Field of Worth serves as both a place of discipline and a stage for spectacle. Primarily used by Hearthaven’s town guard for combat drills and defensive exercises, it has also become a proving ground for adventurers looking to test their mettle. The grounds are a wide, open space reinforced with packed earth and training dummies, surrounded by weapon racks, sparring rings, and observation platforms where locals and travelers alike gather to watch duels. Though officially meant for guard training, the grounds frequently host battles between adventurers eager to prove their worth, showcase new techniques, or settle disputes with steel and sorcery. Some of the most skilled fighters in Mordonia have clashed here, vying for recognition and the respect of their peers. So far, Hearthaven’s most renowned adventuring group, The Platinum Guard, remains largely undefeated, their reputation cementing them as the town’s reigning champions.Arcane Annex
Hearthaven’s intellectual crown jewel is the Arcane Annex, the closest magical center to Solania—a vital resource given Solania’s strict regulations on arcane practices. The library itself is known to many of land's most powerful mages and wizards, despite its quaint surroundings. Within, towering shelves hold ancient tomes, dusty scrolls, and artifacts pulsing with latent magic. The Annex is overseen by Vaelen Thrys, a reclusive elven archivist with a penchant for cryptic questions and an encyclopedic knowledge of the arcane. While the library is open to the public, access to its more dangerous texts requires earning Vaelen’s trust—a feat easier said than done.Butcher’s Block & Kitchen
For culinary needs, the Butcher’s Block & Kitchen serves as both a butcher shop and a rustic eatery, offering hearty meals crafted from the freshest cuts of meat. Run by a grizzled former adventurer-turned-chef, the establishment prides itself on its simple yet satisfying fare—stews thick with venison, roasted fowl basted in rich glazes, and the occasional exotic dish made from monster parts. Its long wooden tables and open fire pits make it a favorite gathering spot, especially for those returning from long journeys, eager to trade stories over a hot meal.Town Hall
The Town Hall, a recently refurbished stone building near the heart of Hearthaven, serves as the seat of local governance. While most adventurers care little for structured leadership, Solania has begun tightening its grip on the town through Provost Vincis, an efficient yet unpopular administrator sent to establish order. Vincis enforces policies meant to regulate Hearthaven’s adventuring economy, including residency approvals and disputes over land or spoils. Though officially impartial, he remains under scrutiny by locals who see him as an unwelcome agent of Solania’s influence.Gilded Gourd
The Gilded Gourd, Hearthaven’s primary potion shop, is a cozy, cluttered establishment filled with an eclectic mix of glass vials, dried herbs, and magical reagents. Run by an earnest young apprentice alchemist, the shop is still finding its footing after the untimely passing of its former master. Though their skills are still developing, the apprentice experiments with bold new concoctions, leading to both miraculous successes and occasional, spectacular failures. The shop stocks a variety of potions—from simple healing drafts to more experimental brews whose effects may surprise even the drinker. Locals visit frequently, both for their alchemical needs and to see what strange new elixir might be on the shelves that week.
