The Other One
The Other One
The Other One is an unusual figure among the bloodthirsty ranks of redcaps. A stark contrast to the savagery and violence that define his kin, he is cheerful, eager to please, and perpetually optimistic—traits that earn him little more than disdain from his kind, especially from their matriarch, the Mother of Redcaps, who dismisses him as a failure.
Physically, The Other One has a short and squat figure, atypical to that of most redcaps, and his demeanor and presentation sets him even further apart. His oversized iron boots clank loudly when he walks, though he often stumbles as if they’re too heavy for him. His blood-red cap, perpetually damp but not nearly as saturated as his peers’ trophies of gore, sits slightly askew on his head. His large, toothy grin rarely fades, and his wide eyes sparkle with an infectious enthusiasm that seems entirely out of place in the grim and brutal Goblin Court.
Unlike his twin brother, Mother's Favorite, who embodies the raw violence and ruthlessness expected of a Redcap, The Other One is woefully incompetent in battle. He swings his sickle awkwardly, often missing his mark, or worse, tripping over his own boots in the attempt. Yet, he seems unfazed by his failures, brushing off scorn and insults with an unshakable positivity that borders on absurd.
The Other One’s loyalty to his brother is unwavering, following Mother's Favorite wherever he goes. While his brother commands fear and respect within the Court, The Other One is treated more like an afterthought, a harmless annoyance. Even so, he is always ready to lend a hand, often offering to clean his brother’s weapons or polish his boots, though he usually ends up making a mess of things.
To those outside the Court, The Other One is an enigma. While redcaps are typically brutal and merciless, he is unexpectedly kind and helpful, even to those deemed enemies of the Goblin Court. He is known to offer assistance to adventurers, pointing them in the right direction or sharing harmless gossip about the Court. His cheerful demeanor can be disarming, and some suspect that his kindness is an act meant to lure others into a trap. But those who interact with him quickly realize that he is genuinely good-natured, if not a little bumbling.
Though he lacks the fierceness and cruelty of his kin, The Other One possesses a strange charm. His optimism and willingness to help stand in stark contrast to the grim, brutal world around him, making him an odd but endearing figure. Still, his presence within the Goblin Court is tolerated only because of his brother’s influence, and even that is tenuous at best.
The Other One seems blissfully unaware of his low standing, happy to remain by his brother’s side and do whatever he can to be useful. Despite the scorn he endures, he harbors no bitterness, carrying on with his cheerful determination. In a Court defined by cruelty and power, The Other One is a curious anomaly—a cheerful misfit who somehow manages to survive in a world that has no respect for him.
The Other One was first met by the party when passing through the Moonwell portal from the Silver Lodge to the Court of Leaves and Whispers.
