The Fugitives

The party is approached by Captain Garry Holdenbrook sent to make a request on behalf of Duke Hueck Greyhall. There are a number of fugitives who have escaped justice in Eastbrook:
  • Wren Carwyn, inflicted with lycanthropy, who slaughtered his family and neighbors.
  • Jennapak Thraxis, aka, Smiling Jenny, a weapons smuggler who was providing weapons to local peasants looking to push back against a raise in their taxes.
The Duke wants the party to return the fugitives with Tertius, that way he can promote his son's actions as being strong on law and order to raise his prestige. The party is uncertain about taking the job and tell Holdenbrook they will get back to him. As soon as he leaves, Malthus Normal arrives and tells the party that he is willing to hire them and pay 1 gold more than the Duke to take these fugitives to the Kingdom of Louth, outside of the Duke's jurisdiction to keep them free.   The party votes on which to accept the job from and is tied. The give Reginald Mossstride a half-vote to settle the tie and he sides with Rieta, who was always nice to him, and they agree to help Malthus.   The party heads out to the safehouse to collect the fugitives. Along the way, they encounter the Heroes of Halfbrook, a rival adventuring party that was hired by Duke Hueck to collect the fugitives since the party turned down his offer. Among the rival group is Harrison Garrington, who has joined the group to gain acclaim for returning the dangerous fugitives. The party does not tell them that they are looking for the same people, but give them misdirection on where to go so they will arrive first.   They reach the safehouse and Slink, a goblin rogue, agrees to lead them the rest of the way. As they head on their way, the party crosses a rope bridge and are attacked by a wyvern. The bridge is broken and Kaal is left behind. Their goblin guide, then leads them through the Ruins of Bol Kahldur, an old dwarven city that runs beneath the Teapeak Mountains. The party makes allies with a group of druegar who were harvesting the poison from a purple worm, and after appealing to their mutual respect for Caena, and Bolvaic drinking a vial of the worm's poison, they agree to help the party pass through the ruins.   The party slays a necromancer, Mysafiestal, in exchange for the druegar's help and they are lead through to the other side of the mountains, arriving just outside of Caer Craftenor in the Kingdom of Louth. As they arrive, Rieta's eyes widen and she states "a minute of your time" and suddenly disappears, seemingly taken by her hag bargain.   The party heads to Lower Caer Craftenor and collects their payment for bringing the fugitives out of Duke Hueck's grasp.
