Stygian Dye

Stygian Dye, is a popular intense black dye found only between the coastal settlements of Deya and Avonel. Most of the supply is dominated by Clan Hamlen who control many of the fishing settlements which harvest the raw materials.

Found only around and between Deya and Avonel manors in the Earldom of Ithiko in the Kingdom of Rethem.

Origin & Source

Raw dye is obtained from a crab, nicknamed Morgaths's Crawlers, who infest the roots of the local Mangroves. Morgaths's Crawlers are large crabs, growing to about 6 inches in size, white legged but have a black upper shell.

The crabs are either trapped in small wicker cages or collected by expert divers. Under the upper shell is a spongy black mass called the Pit from which Stygian Dye is derived. The legs of the crabs are considered a local delicacy in the Rethem.

The Pit is boiled in salt water, dried, ground to a fine dust which is then dissolved in purified water containing a little alcohol creating the famous dye.
