This is the continuation of Session 402 - Water Gone Bad.
The heroes are investigating the death of Sir Patrin Memkele, the Bailiff of Eryna Manor. Although Sir Patrin appeared to have aged prematurely, the actual cause of death was drowning (apparently in his bed).
The heroes make their way to Eryna Manor along the coast. Speaking with local fishermen, they have learned that the harvest has been poor of late. Their trek is interfered with by a trio of huge vicious crustaceans that emerge from the water. The Chuuls are quickly dispatched.
Location - Eryna Manor and Ederyn Hamlet in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 1 – The Missing Priest
At Eryna Manor, the Party meets with Yeoman Corseti, who has been put temporarily in charge of Eryna and the nearby Ederyn Hamlet. Yoman Corseti confirms Sir Patrin spent some of his final days searching for Father Seiros, the village priest of Peoni who went missing a month before, and he spent considerable time visiting the Ederyn Hamlet and the nearest village of Gozdya barbarians. When questioned, the villagers say Father Seiros, ordinarily a placid priest, became fired up with holy zeal before his disappearance. His recent sermons warned against heresy. He spent much time vesting Ederyn Hamlet.
The Party investigates Sir Patrin’s bed chamber on the second level of the manor’s tower. Edelina spots a trace layer of fungal spores in his bed sheets; this could account for his apparent premature aging. His chamber window has been interfered with; someone broke in recently. However, the person must have been a master thief or used magic, given that he had to climb a high wall without any apparent handholds.
Part 2 - Tribesmen
First, the heroes decide to visit the Gozdya tribesmen. Crossing the heath, they are spotted by half a dozen rough, strong-looking warriors wielding spears. The Gozdya tribesman intercepts them. Although wary, they treat the heroes respectfully.Their leader, Lanka, speaks Hârnic well enough and explains that they have not seen Father Seiros in many months; his attempts to convert the tribe were rebuffed. Sir Patrin was well-liked by the tribesmen and visited them several weeks ago, looking for the missing priest. He was treated with honor, but the Gozdya were unable to help.
Part 3 – Man in the Pond
Running out of options to investigate, the heroes visit the nearby Ederyn Hamlet. The tiny growing village has a dozen cottages, some tilled farmland, overlooked by a hill being the obvious location for a future manor house, and off the coast, a small island with a cottage and a large 10ft tall rock. Asking the villager what happened to Father Seiros, the perceptive characters spot a guilty look from several peasants and eyes invertedly flicking toward a small nearby pond. The heroes investigate.
The pond is shallow, and smells of decay; something rotten has contaminated it. Abaddon changes shape into a seal and dive in, and finds a corpse at its bottom. Unfortunately, holding it down is a powerful water element. The large snake-like column of foul water strikes at the characters, fiercely guarding its prize, but it is destroyed.
The rotting corpse is soon identified. It is the missing Father Seiros.
Part 4 – Drowning
Now, at low tide, the Party decides to wade over to the small island off the coast, from whom they learn is occupied by a hermit, Thalyorn. The cottage is empty and contains a small herb garden and essentials. The hermit appears to be a fisherman.
The large rock, similar to a monolith, is more interesting. It is engraved with a series of faint lines and a representation of a whale. Edelina recognizes that as Njehu, the Lord Of Whales, the demigod servant of the god Sarajin. This entity is sometimes considered as the friend to lost sailors and fishermen. A closer examination shows this has recently been carved into the stone. Behind it are more faint, far older lines. These represent a cage in water. This is one of the symbols of Eder, the trapped sea god. It is said that if Eder were to break free of his confinement in the depths of the Ederyn Gulf, disaster would quickly follow.
Then, giant-sized blubbery humanoids emerge from the water with pasty skin and sharklike teeth. Whatever these horrors are, they are quickly dispatched. As the Party recovers from the unexpected skirmish, Remy starts coughing, finding breathing hard. Suddenly, his lungs fill up with seawater, and he begins to choke and drown. Edelina frantically squeezes his chest to expel the water, but it does little good. Suspecting some curse, Odin begins reciting prayers to the good goddess Larani. Eventually, Edelina and Odin’s actions buy enough time for Remy to cough up the last of the water and recover. It was close; he nearly drowned on dry land in the same way as the unfortunate Sir Patrin.
