Odin needs an enchanted sword. Fortunately, he knows a skilled weaponsmith. Cearbhall Ciernack is a Jarinese master weaponsmith and enchanter from the Dwarven Kingdom of Azadmere. When he last met Cearbhall, he was searching for meteorite metal on Anfla Island. However, he has learned that the smith has recently visited the City of Aleath with the intent of selling his precious metals. The Party rushes to Aleath to speak with their old friend.
Location - City of Aleath in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 1 – The Dwarf
At Aleath, the party visits Weaponcrafter Owyn of Kuradin. Master Owyn admits speaking with Cearbhall a month ago. It was not a friendly conversation. Master Owyn was insulted by Cearbhall's attitude and refuses to deal with him again. The weaponcrafter is a short man with a long beard who speaks with a foreign accent, giving the impression he is part dwarf. The quality of his work is very good, but he also sells some dwarven-made weapons and implies that they are his work. And the angrier Master Owyn becomes, the more his fake accent slips. During the fruitless conversation, one of his apprentices rolls his eyes and motions to the heroes to go outside.Sometime later, the apprentice meets with the party out of sight in a back alleyway. He says Cearbhall accused Master Owyn of fraud and stormed off. The apprentice tells them that Master Cearbhall mentioned accepting a commission from Lord Mankele of Aleura Manor. Aleura Manor is across the Eryn River, an isolated unpopulated part of the kingdom uncomfortably close to the occasionally cannibalistic Gozdya barbarian Tribes. The Party hires a fishing boat, crosses the Eryn River, and makes their way to the isolated settlement.
Part 2 – The Elements Go to War
As the Party approaches the narrow Tynea River, two agitated hunters approach them. They warn the heroes that something strange is happening: the earth is rumbling, rocks are flying everywhere, and the river is bubbling.
The heroes cautiously approach the disturbance. A huge Earth Elemental appears to be battling a similarly sized Water Elemental. As they watch, a giant bear emerges from the woods fighting with the Earth Elemental, and an enormous frog appears from the river fighting on the side of the water elemental. Not sure which, if any, side to take, the heroes watch.
Remy gets a closer look and notes that the Water Elemental is starting to win. Suddenly, a tendril of high-pressure water slams into his chest. That is enough, and the party attacks. The Water Elemental and the Frog are swiftly destroyed, saving the bear and the walking wall of earth. The Earth Elemental is not aggressive, so Edelina casts the Tongues Spell so the party can communicate. The heroes are suddenly able to understand the elemental's low pitch rumbling, it says that the “Water gone bad.” Unfortunately, they cannot get any further helpful information except “The evil comes from the Sea.”
Intrigued, the travelers continued their trek to Aleura Manor, traveling along the coast. Brief conversations with passing fishermen describe poor fishing.
Location - Aleura Manor in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 3 – Reunion with an Old Friend
Their friend Master Weaponsmith Cearbhall Ciernack is at the Aleura Manor, where the heroes find him working in the small forge. He warmly greets his old friends. After a catch-up over drinks, Odin asks if he would be willing to accept a commission from him. Cearbhall will be happy to accept a new commission after completing his current project for Lord Weslin Mankele, but suggests another option. Sir Weslin has commissioned two weapons, the bastard sword Ironheart and a great sword named Flameweave. One weapon was intended for Sir Weslin's brother, Sir Patrin Mankele, the Bailiff of the nearby Eryna Manor. Sadly, Sir Patrin has recently died under mysterious circumstances a week ago. Sir Weslin may be willing to give Odin one of the swords if the cause of the mysterious death can solved. Cearbhall introduces the would-be investigators to Sir Weslin Mankele. The Lord of Aleura and Eryna Manors is a level-headed warrior distressed after his younger brother’s death. He explains that one side of his brother’s body had aged unnaturally, and he died in his bed in the Manor house at Eryna. The villagers from Eryna and the nearby Ederyn Hamlet are convinced he was cursed by the Gozdya barbarians or one of their witch doctors. Sir Weslin is unconvinced and needs more evidence before considering reprisals. The only unusual event leading up to the death was that the local priest of Peoni, Father Seiros, had disappeared. Some locals say he never returned from missionary work, attempting to preach to savage Gozdya barbarians. Sir Patrin is believed to have visited the nearby Gozdya village a few days before his death.
The party received permission to examine Sir Patrin’s corpse, currently interred in the family crypt. Half of his body is shriveled; it looks like it is aging but with more surface wrinkling of the skin. When the body is moved, the players hear a squishing sound. His lungs are filled with water, “Sea Water,” Edelina exclaims “He did not die of old age, he drowned”.
Lord Weslin authorizes the heroes to investigate, and if they find and deal with the cause of his brother’s death, he will give Odin one of the swords he has commissioned.
