Abaddon has traveled the wilderness, perfecting his impressive martial skills.
Edelina, a scholarly priestess of the god of Knowledge Save K’Nor, joins them on their adventures.
This is the continuation of Session 392 - Darobi Ruins.
The heroes have destroyed the murderous undead knight, Sir Morghan Cade; however, as an Amorvin or free-willed undead, he has 13 lives, his physical body will reform in a specially prepared unholy sanctum. Clan Cade previously held Darobi Manor, formerly part of the Kingdom of Rethem, but lost it during Ezar's War almost 30 years ago. Darobi Manor is now a ruin and uncomfortably close to the border. The heroes suspect Sir Cade’s sanctum may be hidden in the ruins.
A gang of bandits occupied the ruins. After they were massacred, the heroes discovered that their leader was a walking corpse possessed by a devious Intellect Devourer. After a brief fight, the malicious walking brain escaped down the village well. The heroes bandaged their wounds and jumped down the well after the little horror.
Location - The ruins of Dyrobi Manor in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 1 – Jumping down the Well
The well is mostly dry, although a shallow stream runs south. What is immediately noticeable are the masses of webs. When Edelina conjures a magical lantern, light flares throughout the chamber, and six enormous spiders are illuminated. These 7-foot-tall arachnids step forward in spindly legs and vomit a sickening spray onto the heroes before attempting to bite chunks out of them. They are also agile, bobbing and weaving, avoiding the hero attacks.
However, eventually, they are eradicated.
Part 2 – Fungi Everywhere
The heroes follow the narrow stream that opens into a large cavern with many side passages, wholly infested with all manner of fungi. Giant mushrooms, mold, oozy patches, and mildew create an alien landscape. Bursting out of it, half a dozen 4 ft tall violet teardrop-shaped masses of fungus with four flailing tentacles shamble forward on small, rootlike feelers at its base. The violet fungus rotting touch causes the heroes much anguish, and the stubby creatures up quite a fight.
Things look grim until Remy accelerates a wave of cards that slice through grouped fungus, and Abaddon's shape changes into a crocodile and attacks from the shallow river. The fungi are cut to pieces.
The party is hurt, but as Edelina tends them, a disgusting huge ball of fungi floats forward; at its base are dozens of tendrils ending in sharp, looking, bone-like hoods. The tendrils spray out, catching Abaddon. However, the nibble monk easily slips out of its grasp. Odin fires one of his magical Storm Arrows at the horror, and it tears a hole in its side, which spews noxious gas. Remy finishes it off after impaling it with conjured spikes of metal.
Part 3 – The Vault
Further on the party, spot a walled section with an ancient rusty door. The door has the Coat of Arms of Clan Cade engraved, although it has somewhat faded.
Abaddon moves through the mass of fungi to investigate. However, the fungi cover a series of deep spiked pit traps. He easily evades them, but not the Intellect Devourer hiding in a nearby cavity. The little fiend leaps on their back, tearing into him and trying to enter his brain. It fails, so instead, it attempts to control Abaddon as it did perilously (refer to the last session). Once again, Abaddon becomes Confused, attacking his friends while the Intellect Devourer scurries back, attacking the heroes at the rear.
Odin and Remy attack the tiny horror while trying to avoid Abaddon’s skillful jabs with his spear. Easier said than done, with Edelina having to use her most powerful healing magic to keep Remy alive. Eventually, Odin lines the walking brain up and slices it in twain with a mighty blow. However, the Abaddon doesn’t know the fight is over and has to be bashed senseless.
Part 4 – The Hidden Treasure
The heroes are disappointed when they open the vault; there is no hidden unholy sanctum or undead knight to destroy but an old chest. The hastily concealed treasures of Clan Cade from thirty years ago when they fled. Unfortunately, some treasures have deteriorated with age, but there are ten silver bars, coins, a whip talisman, and an enchanted necklace (necklace of fireballs). There is also the Clan Cade journal with family records in good condition, dating back to when it was founded by a Kuboran barbarian about a century ago. It looks like Sir Morghan Cade is likely the only surviving member of the main line of the family. Darobi Manor was their only major holding.
