Session 254 - Rescuing the Lepers Report in Misty Isle of Harn | World Anvil

Session 254 - Rescuing the Lepers

General Summary

20th of Larane (Second month of Summer) 725TR

The story so far

The heroes have learned that the Church of Morgath plans to unleash a plague on the Thardic Republic, ferment chaos, and then install a dictator. These evil priests have a secret base on Molok Island where they experiment with all manner of vile diseases, cruelly using lepers as test subjects.

The party has snuck onto the island and located the hidden underground base.

This is the continuation of Session 253 - The Dead and the Diseased.

Location - Molok Island west of the City of Golotha in the Kingdom of Rethem.

Part 1 - The Vaults

The characters are exhausted and decide to retreat the way they came. They investigate the vaults on islets on the North West of Morlok Island. Several are empty; however, one is flooded and contains a large stone sarcophagus. Inscribed around it are runes that Jolanta identifies as some form of containment magic. The party decides to leave well enough alone and not meddle.

A second flooded vault contains much debris. This is the lair of the Ithu’rath, the horror the heroes destroyed (Session 252 - Molok Island), and among the debris are gems, gold coins, and a brutal-looking enchanted warclub.

The final open vault, covered in shattered bones, is occupied; Avon hears movement in a stone casket but quickly jams it shut. Whatever is in the casket remains trapped. The bones suddenly animate and tear into the characters. The Bone Swarm is pounded to dust.

The heroes find a shaft that leads back into the underground complex. They rest up and, the following evening, make their way down it.

Part 2 - Sneaking Back

The passage opens up in a small chamber with the floor covered in sticky blood, which is inhabited by the Shadow and animates. The Blood Ooze drains the blood of the heroes and tears into their flesh. It is eventually splattered.

Avon opens a locked door, and the party starts exploring.

Part 3 - Leper Cells

The passage leads into a prison; a dozen mistreated lepers are locked in dirty cells. As Avon sneaks in and unlocks their cages, three Priests of Morgath call the underground complex remaining Undead guards and summon Wraiths. A vicious battle ensures. Jolanta and Blaine are driven to the limit by a combination of Fingers of Death and flesh-tainting spells. Moneypenny backs off, and Avon scores some excellent hits but is temporarily Banished. The wraiths kill several lepers, and horrifyingly, the bodies animated and attacked the characters. Eventually, the last of the evil priests and the undead are destroyed.

From the lepers, the heroes learn that the temple has called for help from the Chruch of Morgath in the nearby City of Golotha, reinforcements should arrive soon. Acheron, who was scouting outside, confirms their arrival. Also, they learn that the temple has a chamber where they breed their diseases and rats.

Part 5 - The Rat Chambers

The party makes its way to this disease-breeding chamber. Bone heaps surround the entrance. The suspicious Jolanta disintegrates them, destroying possible guardians.

This leads down to a dark chamber; Spectral Warriors attack, followed by Zombies, and, further back, the heroes hear the sleep-inducing buzz emitting from fly-like demons. One of the Chasme leaps onto Acheron, impaling him with its spikey proboscis, nearly killing him. However, the demons and the undead are eliminated.

The rooms beyond are filled with cages filled with sickly, disease-infested rats. Jolanta and Acheron take great glee in destroying this foul corruption with spells, magic, and fire.

Part 5 - The Final Insult

Hiding on a nearby islet, the party and rescued lepers observe the chaos on Molok Island. The Order of the Lord of Chaos brings additional priests, Company of Dead Men warriors and likely undead as reinforcements and hunt out the invaders. The heroes have scored a significant victory in destroying the evil priest's plans to create a new plague, at least for the moment.

At night Acheron returns to the City of Golotha and arranges a large fishing boat to transport the party and surviving lepers to the Kingdom of Kanday. The group escapes, and as a final insult, Avon summons a Water Elemental, which sinks the evil priest's black boat moored at Molok's docks.

To be continued.
