Part 1 - Mission 4 - A Lost Ring

Jolanta has another meeting with Viran Ceredig Yerwold. As an up-and-coming agent of Order of the White Hand, Jolanta may need to travel to distant locations. Wizards often use Godstones as a shortcut. Unfortunately, Psionic Talent is required in order to operate these unpredictable devices, and despite intensive testing, Jolanta has demonstrated no such abilities.

However, they are ways to remedy this situation. Mysterious Earthmaster Rings of Mystic Wonder can confer Psionic Ability temporarily or on some occasions permanently. Three such rings were discovered in the Earthmaster site of Lánwa in the far distant continent of Anzelôria and were being transported to the guildhall on the merchant vessel, the Smoka. Tragically the Somak was recently lost as sea.

Viran Ceredig has learned that trade goods from what may have been the Smoka have recently been sold at the shop of the Merchantyler Undarshill Orlymin at the Alienage. If this was the case is possible that maybe the rings of mystic wonder could be recovered. Jolanta is asked to investigate.

Part 2 - A Suspicious Merchant

At the Alienage, Jolanta enters Merchantyler Undarshill shop. It is well guarded by vicious mastiffs and two sentries. Undarshil displays a wide range of goods. Most interesting are Jade knives, carved ivory, oddly decorated porcelain, and a statuette of a small man dangling from what looks like a wing. Jolanta believes these are artifacts from Anzelôria. Playing the agent of a rich investor, Jolanta makes some inquiries. Undarshil is evasive regarding the source but allows Jolanta to study the artifacts. He also tells her that he may be able to organize more examples.

Torgon
Jolanta leaves the shop and discretely observes Undarshil talking to one of his guards, who immediately visits a nearby tenement, changes into travel clothes, and leaves the city. Jolanta and Blain attempt to follow but lose him at the city gates.

Needing to discover which way he went, Jolanta asks the beggars around the city the gates. A one-legged man seems observant. He is Torgon and a former sailor, possible pirate, and a rascal. He attempts to pick Jolanta's money pouch but is caught. When pressed, he confirms he saw the man has headed east, and Torgon has seen him before, He thinks he is a smuggler, although Torgon thinks it odd that he would be smuggling goods into the Alienage. Torgan seems rough but good-natured, and to atone for his pickpocketing he agrees to follow this man discreetly.

Location - Kaln Point on the west coast of the Island of Melderyn.

Part 3 - Sharks

Torgon is surprisingly spry and stealthy despite his wooden peg leg, but he is spotted and confronted by the smuggler. The Heroes come to his rescue, and the smuggler is quickly incapacitated. After a quick bit of interrogation, he says he is working with a small band of men lead by Zanac, living in a cave near Kaln Point. He believes the wreck of the Somak is nearby but has not seen it. The Heroes let him go but searching along the coast, find nothing of interest.

With no other choice, they approach the smugglers' cave and announce themselves. Four disreputable-looking men emerge, led by Zanac, a capable-looking warrior. Jolanta explains she wants to search the wreck and has special abilities to locate hard-to-find items. Zanac agrees to let them search but wants the first pick of any goods recovered. He leads them to the wreck site, in a bay not far away with evidence of a camp and the remains of a large fire on the beach. Zanac warns Jolanta of a "Giant Octopus" guarding the wreck. The Smugglers find this statement amusing.

Jolanta and Blaine wade into the water and examine the wreck. It looks like the smugglers have picked it clean. There are small sharks that take bites at the Heroes, but they are easily defeated. Unfortunately, the blood attracts a much larger shark which in a blood-fueled frenzy savages into Blaine. He is nearly eaten alive, relying on Jolanta's magic and the surprising prowess of Torgon with a short bow to get him to safety on land. The smugglers find this struggle hilarious.

With the shark eventually dispatched, Jolanta enters the water again and, after some investigation, detects the familiar glow of magic. She finds some ivory, strange coins, a gem, and a ring. The ring matches the description of a Ring of Mystic Wonder and glows with magic. Jolanta uses an incantation to clean the gem and ivory out of the smuggler's view and make the ring look tarnished and dirty. The devious Zanac when viewing the items and considers killing the Heroes and claiming everything. However, given the unknown factor of Jolanta's obvious arcane abilities, he thinks better of it and takes the ivory and the gem. He has no interest in the ring. He and his band pack up camp and head off to another location.

Part 4 - Power of the Mind

Arrilion, art by Attacus
Back at the Guildhall of Arcane Lore, a fellow member of the White Hand, the mysterious elf Arrilion, examines the ring and believes it is a Ring of Mystic Wonder and does not appear to be defective. He gets his assessment double-checked by the talented Psionicist Wilcock Suddicke.

Wilcock finds no flaws with the item but believes there have been recent dark criminal actions surrounding this item.

Jolanta tries on the ring and feels her mind awaken with a burst of strange energy. The ring imparts on her the Psionic ability of Negation, the power to create a barrier to neutralize magical or psionic energies.

Interestingly, Jolanta learns more about this strange elf Arrilion. He has no memories of events from over 1,000 years ago or any time he spent in the Elven Forest. Why this would be is a mystery.

Ring of Mystic Wonder

by Attacus

Appearance: These rings usually have a purple gem in a simple setting.

Attunement: Required.

Properties: A wearer gains a randomly-generated psionics talent for as long as the ring is worn. A ring always grants the same psionic talent.

Once the ring has been consistently worn, it may confer the psionic talent permanently if the wearer makes a DC20 Charisma check. These checks can be made each time the wearer gains a level. Some rings are faulty and can cause madness or loss of psionic talents.

Charges: N/A.

Psionic Talent - Negation

You create a psionic field that stops magical and psionic activity.

Negation – As an action, you create a 10 ft radius invisible spherical psionic field around the invoker. Any spell or psionic effect of a level half that of the psionicist, or lower, cast from outside the psionic field can’t affect creatures or objects within it, even if the spell is cast using a higher-level spell slot. The psionic field moves with the invoker; however they are limited to a movement rate of maximum 10ft and cannot use any form of teleport. This ability lasts for 1 minute and requires concentration. This talent is usable once per short rest.
