Comparative Metaphysics in Mirrarium | World Anvil

Comparative Metaphysics

Comparative Metaphysics is an area of study at the Androcas University of Higher Mysteries. It focuses on comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences between different Magical Paradigms. As such, it is a particular area of interest for the Sacred Order of the Aleftav Renaissance, although most members have other areas of major study and either take Comparative Metaphysics classes to satisfy some gen eds, or get a minor in it. Nevertheless, it is posisble to make it one's major, and there are a number of important research projects in the field.

Course Offerings (a brief selection)

CMP101: Introduction to Paradigms

This is a very high-level overview of a few of the most popular magical paradigms. The course begins with a quick dive into what a paradigm actually is - what a magic researcher means when they say 'paradigm' to begin with. The course then proceeds to give a brief overview of Alchemy, Thaumatology and Theurgy, and Witchcraft and Hedge Magic.

CMP102: Overview of Additional Paradigms

This is a companion class to CMP101 designed to be taken concurrently with or subsequently to it. It gives a high-level overview of a few paradigms not covered in CMP101, including Natural Thaumatology and Theurgy, Applied Psychology and Sociology, and Inborn Powers.

CMP201: Thaumatology, Thaumaturgy, and Theurgy

Prerequisite: Either CMP101 or TMY101 (Thaumatology 101: Introduction to Wonder-working, a required class for most Thaumatology, Thaumaturgy/Thaumaturgic Engineering, and Theurgy/Theurgic Engineering degrees.)   Thaumatology, Thaumaturgy, and Theurgy all fall under the categorization of 'Divine' magic, but the differences can be difficult to understand to an outsider. This class goes into depth about the definitions and differences between Thaumaturgic and Theurgic magic, as well as gives a brief overview of Thaumatology - the theoretical branch of Thaumaturgy.
