Sacred Order of the Aleftav Renaissance

A secret society that exists within the students, faculty, and alumni of the Androcas University of Higher Mysteries, sometimes called the Sacred Order of the Aleftav Renaissance Androcas University of Higher Mysteries branch, other times known as SOAR Ham. Although they claim a direct line from the ancient Order of Aleftav, there is dubious evidence for it at best. Theoretically it is a fraternal/sororal society with the aim of preserving ancient knowledge, but in practice it's more an excuse to get together and drink.   Despite this, members of the society do often find benefit in being a member in good standing, not least of which due to the number of distinguished members among the almuni, who are quite willing to give jobs and deals to other members. Outsiders will think that this is an oddly circular and self-referential endeavor with no real point, but that is the nature of such societies.   Others believe that there's an inner circle that does most of the actual 'preservation of knowledge' and that the kind of silly rituals held for initiation and such by the outer circle are but a pale reflection of the true rites that are actually performed for those in the know. These believers point to the fact that SOAR does own a large library. On the other hand this implies that if there is such an inner circle they are mostly overworked librarians.   Still, they throw a good kegger.

History

Founded in 5295, SOAR has a fairly long history with the University. It was founded by a student of Comparative Metaphysics, Anthony 'Crow' Dee, with help and guidance from the dean of the College of Metaphysics, Giergi Yuslav. The old legend goes that Yuslav was one of the last remaining members of the Order of Aleftav at the time and inducted Dee and created SOAR in order to preserve his society's knowledge. It was through contributions made by Yuslav and gained from anonymous donors Yuslav secured that SOAR was able to begin its library.   Much like the Order of Aleftav itself, SOAR has always been open to men and women, though about 70% of the members are male. Despite the aforementioned parties, the order to this day has always tended to attract introverts and loners. (Indeed, some members may have joined largely to have a more structured social outlet.)
