Wheelbarrow Wife

Wheelbarrow Wife is the name given to a game played during festivals amount the Crienia. The game can be played during weddings or Harvest festivals or gatherings amount the people in a festive gathering outside the common festivals.   The game is played when married couples line up at the starting line of the race, and then the husband takes the legs of the wife so that the wife stands on her arms, and when the race begins, the husband guides his wife through the route as fast as the wife can stay on her hands. Along the way, onlookers cheer, jest, and shower the couple with confetti and well wishes, embracing the festive spirit of the tradition.   The tradition of the Wheelbarrow Wife game is said to symbolise playfulness, humour and laughter, as well as the need to work together as a couple. It is also said that the couple that wins the race is getting extra luck in the relationship.   Even though the younger generations consider the game a bit old-fashioned, young couples are still lining up to participate in the game whenever one happens during a festival. One area where the old traditional game has changed is that it has become more common to see engaged and not yet married couples participate in the game.   The Wheelbarrow Wife game is an old and cherished custom by the Crienia people. As the Crienia spread out along with their legions throughout the Dercian region, other people have taken up the tradition as well, and its particularly popular among The Nilid People who have adopted many if not most of the traditions of the Crienia as the Nilid settled down in their new home after the exodus from the Principality of Clifia.
