Taranthium is a sprawling coastal city, nestled along the
Empire of Dercias southern coast, serving as an important stop for maritime trade among merchants the city is known as the Jewel of the Azure coast.
Equally among the merchants, the city is known for its vibrant bazaars, enormous warehouses and the feeling of a city that barely sleeps. Likewise, the city is a melting pot of cultures, while the city was founded by
Crienias the city soon enough attracted people from all over and today one can find almost all races in the city.
The city was founded early on in the expansion of the empire during the
First unification war both as a waystation and a strategic port for the naval ships of
Pearlhal and the first settlement were named in honour of Caius Marelius Taranthus, the senator tasked with the construction of the port, overtime the name Taranthium evolved from his family name.
Harbour District:
The city's harbour is massive and with piers extending like fingers into the sea, huge breakwaters shield the port from storms and a towering lighthouse guides ships safely into the harbour.
The lighthouse, Saltspire, is located on a small island just next to the entrance to the harbour, it's the pride and joy of the locals and it's said that its beacon is enchanted so that the light never dies out.
The Bazaar
Some say that the bazaar is the beating heart of the city while others say it's the taverns where one can find all forms of entertainment, what they can all agree on is that the bazaar is colossal and during the height of summer will even wind its way down the narrow streets of the city as merchants fight for the best spots to sell their wares.
Old Town
The narrow cobbled streets in the eastern part of the city are the ancient heart of the city and are home to ancient buildings with whitewashed stone still to this day the old town is home to the most prominent temple to the gods such as Aqualia, god of the sea.
Outskirts
Beyond the city walls is the sprawl of fishing villages, farms and vineyards, the vineyards provide the city with the grapes for the wine that the city is known for, the Tarant wine.
The Dockmasters’ Guild
Ensures that the city docks operate smoothly, one of the most powerful guilds in the city and is currently led by Maro Tallias
Tide Blades
A bunch of criminals, bandits, and no-gooders, the Tide Blades have many names they style themself as a band of naval mercenaries and is hired by the captains of the ships as protection. They are often at odds with the City guards but as they pay well in the taverns and protect the wares of the rich, the governor turn a blind eye towards their activities.
Sounds like an interesting place to visit, though I would be very wary of the Tide Blades. I love the sound of the Old Town.
