Session 15
After defeating the giant spiders on the first floor of the Hollow Mountain, the Party found the stairs leading to the second. The room they entered was round and reasonably lit. Two lit passageways wide enough for two people, one to the north and the other to the west, jutted out of the circular room. The group decided to head westward, where they could hear some non-human voices laughing and talking. They attempted to sneak in, only to have Bloodbane accidentally kick a a rock into the room, alerting its occupants.
A pair of ogres appeared, instantly throwing a javelin and impaling Bloodbane in the chest with it. The ensuing combat was fierce and fraught with mortal peril. A successful blast of chain lightning from the Ravager wielded by Bloodbane tore through the room, dealing tremendous damage to the ogres. But it would not be enough to stop them. A few more well placed blows from the group would be needed to finally defeat them.
The group slowly continued their dungeon crawl into the room immediately to the north, finding that a group of unknown size was waiting across the next room. The Party decided that they didn't want to fight in a narrow corridor again, so they agreed to attempt to seize the element of surprise. Bloodbane kicked the door off its hinges and ran in, Vigwalin right behind him. Sir Didymus and Typhon got hung up in the doorway. Two Bugbears, a Hobgoblin, and a Goblin Boss were taken by surprise, but it would not last. The combat lasted for what seemed like an eternity, with Typhon attempting to subdue the creatures with his webbing, only to have it catch fire and deal damage to the Goblin Boss. One by one, the opponents fell, but not without tremendous effort on the part of the Party.
The noise generated by the fighting brought in another group of two hobgoblins, a bugbear chieftan, and a pet wolf immediately after they had subdued the first group. This second group got trapped in the hallway, and had the lead hobgoblin picked off by Sir Didymus and Vigwalin. Eventually they pulled back into the armory where they began launching volleys of arrows at the Party. Sir Didymus, in act of either foolishness or bravery, stormed into the room followed by Vigwalin and Bloodbane. Vigwalin successfully entangled the group in vines which erupted from the ground beneath them while Bloodbane hacked off the arm of the bugbear chieftan. But it would not hold forever; the bugbear chieftan broke free and nearly killed Sir Didymus with a crushing strike of his morningstar! Sir Didymus was able to rally and dispatched the creature with extreme prejudice. At that moment, the wolf and the hobgoblin broke free as well and began their assault on Vigwalin. All seemed lost, until Sir Didymus successfully killed the wolf, while Bloodbane charged in from behind with lightning crackling off of Ravager, and cleaved the hobgoblin in two, bringing the combat to a close.
Typhon, meanwhile, had managed to cast hypnotic gaze on the goblin boss and was attempting to gain information from him. He learned that the goblin's name was Grubmug, and that Ovrul Rend worked with them. Their mission was to scour the countryside, searching for a particular gem and the person who had it. This gem would offer untold - and unspecified - power to whomever would wield it.
The group also uncovered several weapons in the armory that looked similar to some of the weapons being made by Evyn Rose from Hillfar, likely the result of the nefarious dealings by Liam Carr and Joanna Byrne. They also uncovered a crudely drawn map of the area. The Party must now finish searching the second level for the vault that Thurgramm Hammersmith told them about...
This crudely drawn map of northeast Paglary Province depicts a number of X'ed-out towns, and multiple others with circles around them. Locations of camps (Camp 1 and Camp 2, respectively) are highlighted.
