Scyldari

Scyldarians are a species of sapient bipedal mammalians that originated on the ocean world of Scyldaria. Naturally amphibious, they have hydrophobic fur, webbed digits, and can hold their breath for up to thirty minutes. These traits allowed them to thrive on both land and in the sea, despite not being fully adapted to either. Despite having evolved as an amphibious species, Scyldarians are not capable of subsisting entirely from salt water. Most of their water intake comes from food, and they can safely consume small amounts of salt water due to a highly efficient filtering organ (analagous to kidneys in Humans).

Compared to other species, Scyldarians are somewhat smaller with less dense muscle mass. Xenobiologists believe this is due to a combination of lower levels of hunting in their early evolutionary history, slightly lower gravity on Scyldaria, and a lack of amphibious predators. Although hunting did take place, with groups of early Scyldarians taking down colossal undersea creatures, it was secondary to gathering in shallow waters and on coastlines.

Scyldarians are noted to have high levels of empathy for others. They are more strongly affected by the emotions of others, and have an innate distaste for violence. Instead, the Scyldari prefer dialogue and negotiation, a trait which is culturally supported by the main spiritual and cultural institutions of the Scyldari Confederacy. Due to this, Scyldarians are renowned throughout the galaxy as expert diplomats.
