Politician

A politican is an elite profession involved in the governance of a state. Politicians undertake policy-making processes from a position in government, debating and making decisions and legislation that will affect their constituents. Naturally, as the peak of political involvement, the nature of a politician is entirely dependent on the form of government they are a part of. In the United Nations of Earth, politicians are elected officials to local, planetary, or federal offices that are accountable to the public, engage in transparent debates, and vote on legislation that affects their voters. In the Tzynn Empire, politicians are appointed generals, advisors, and governors that debate policy behind closed doors, advise the Emperor on recommended courses of action, and lead efforts to implement the Emperor's decrees when they are issued.

The field of politics is essentially a group of individuals determining how best to organise themselves as a society. Every society from the beginning of every civilisation has done this, and politicians are the result. They are entrusted by the greater population to lead them and take charge of societal organisation, even if the methods between societies differ. Many of the issues related to politicians are addressed by how a society organises the ways politicians function: democracies believe in accountability and transparency, while autocracies believe in efficiency and decisive action. Corruption is perhaps the most common issue involving politicians, and most interstellar governments have dedicated anti-corruption authorities dedicated to the task of rooting it out.

As politicians cannot rule a state alone, they require buy-in from other actors. Often the elites of society, these can include other politicians, bureaucrats, important merchants, high-ranking military officers, the media, special interest groups, and if applicable, their constituents. Politicians need to balance the competing demands from these groups as they implement their agendas. Should a politician be unable to keep these groups happy, they might find themselves deposed. In a democracy, they would be voted out of office in an election. In an autocracy, a superior might remove them from their position, or they may be removed in a coup d'état.
