Birthdays of the Veldens

The Veldens celebrate their birthdays a little differently than other cultures due to their proximity to the Exiles' Bridge. Before the person having the birthday is of age, their father or mother ventures into the Grand Dunes and searches for the most unique plant they can find. Once this is done, the plant is used to create the theme of the birthday celebration, using the colors of the plant as the primary colors of the party and theming the foods and decorations around the plant's shape. This means that the quality of the celebration is often based on how good the parents are at finding cool things, but most are generally good sports about it.   After coming of Age:
After coming of age, the birthday-haver makes a journey into the Grand Dunes in search of the Exiles' Bridge. Their goal is to find it and return by themselves with no outside assistance. The previous birthdays serve to familiarize them with the flora around the Bridge and also to get them used to the diversity of plants near their home. The coming of age journey isn't overly difficult, but there are several species of venomous snakes out in the Grand Dunes so they do have to be observant. On their return a large party is thrown for them utilizing all the colors and types of decorations from their previous birthdays.

Observance

Like most other human groups on Melra, the Veldens celebrate their birthdays every year on the day they were born. Unlike many other groups, however, Veldens stop major celebrations of birthdays after they come of age. At that point onward they typically just spend their birthdays reminiscing with their loved ones about the year they've had. The exception to this is milestone birthdays (such as 50, 100, 150, and so on), though these typically lack the flair of early birthdays.
