Aereum
Aereum is the name given to the material used in the construction of the Ark and the Megastructure, named for its remarkably low weight.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Aereum is a metallic-looking, slightly conductive, extremely hard and extremely light material. It is notably harder than duranium, despite a remarkably low density of approximately 1.5kg/m³.
History & Usage
Manufacturing & Products
The manufacturing method of Aereum is not currently known. Even its composition is unclear, as nondestructive methods of analysis have proven to be inconclusive, and destructive ones have proven to significantly alter the composition. Any destruction of the material (which requires very high energies) results in the creation significant amounts of heavy radioactive isotopes, leading to the suggestion that stabilized superheavy elements may play a role in the composition, which would however conflict with the light weight.
Distribution
Law & Regulation
As the only current source of the material is destructive extraction from the Megastructure and the UDSA considers the Megastructure an archaeological site, extraction is considered a violation of UDSA treaties and therefore Aereum is not generally available legally and products of it are rare.
