The Silver Lady's Heralds

When the Silver Siren controlled the Silver Sea , she developed certain insights into the Altar of Self. Though the gate remained closed for her - her intense ego would never give enough of itself to allow passage - she learned to sense Foreigners being pulled into Maverot. When she found she could call out to those souls and force them to awaken in her domain, she initially used this to her selfish benefit and enjoyment. However, after prolonged exposure to her other self, she repented of her ways and sacrificed herself to become a bridge over which native Maverotians could escape their dying world. Her other self, the Silver Lady, was left behind to put the Siren's unique ability to good use.   For a short time, Foreigners pulled into Maverot escaped almost instantly, as the Silver Lady intercepted them and instructed them on the method of return. After the Baron defiled her and destroyed her body, she lost many personal memories - including her mission - and began seeking promising Foreigners to help her recover herself. These she calls to herself as they pass through the gate and then makes demands of them, dangling the possibility of escape as an irresistible incentive. She calls those who accept her one-sided bargain "Heralds".   Many times she has summoned groups of people to her side and sent them out on her quest. Many times they have failed. Few now escape Maverot through the Altar of Self, for the Silver Lady jealously guards what she once gave freely.   The Silver Lady seems to have a criteria for those she picks - a prospective Herald shouldn't be so unskilled that they immediately crumble under the hostile conditions of Maverot, nor should they be too strong lest they decide to turn the tables on her. Aside from her first ones, she calls groups of three or more. There isn't a clear preference of personality, and she certainly hasn't always called malleable ones, but amongst themselves there typically does seem to be party cohesion.    As time goes on and her Heralds continue failing in increasingly devastating ways, desperation has driven her to become more erratic, distant, and capricious.
1st Group (Gnaw & Wisp)
The Silver Lady accompanied these two on their journey, having many adventures. She did not demand they find her a mask or help her with her troubles, thinking it better to wait until the opportunity presented itself. After the concluding her travels with her first Heralds, the following groups were called in rapid succession.   2nd Group   The Silver Lady accompanied this group and directed all their actions. She sought out places in the world where she might find a mask, to no avail. Having no opportunity for growth, this group eventually succumbed to the stupefying darkness of Maverot and became useless to the quest. The Silver Lady brought them back to her island near the Altar of Self to live in relative safety until such a time as they might be able to pass through the gate.   3rd Group   Recognizing that she had not given the previous group enough agency, the Silver Lady accompanied this group but did not take a leadership role. Unfortunately this generated suspicion among her Heralds, who could not understand why, if she was with them and could solve a problem, she did not. Their uncertainty about both her and themselves caused them to eventually fall prey to stress. During her time with this group, the Silver Lady discovered that a Solarcrat outside of her territory generated a great deal of tension. A close call with the Three Hunters convinced her that any further personal participation was too dangerous.   4th Group   Having found that the Baron had taken all the masks that formerly were found in the strange growth near the Razor Specialist's domain, the Silver Lady decided she might be able to accomplish all her goals at once if her Heralds could steal both a mask and a her finger bone directly from the Baron himself. She sent this group to Cliffside but did not accompany them, given her presence seemed to hinder more than help in her previous efforts. This group learned valuable information in Cliffside, but were eventually destroyed by that town's crazed culture.   5th Group   Taking what she had learned from the previous group, the Silver Lady again sent her Heralds to Cliffside. This time they were well informed enough to get what they needed and escape the town without incident. They gathered tools necessary to fight vampires, then attempted their assault on the Baron. They failed.   6th Group   (Basil's group)
The stunning tragedy of the previous group shocked the Silver Lady and caused her to wait a very long time before trying again. During this hiatus, she crafted magical lanterns using her Memory of Light to guide future Heralds. She hoped that the unbiased supernatural qualities of the lanterns would prove better guidance than her own. Using her Memory of Light this way damaged her memories of her experiences with her Heralds, leaving her less able to provide useful guidance.   7th Group
