Glarune

The glarune is the official currency within the Crown Lands of Demia. They are small silver coins with the face of the Ekärti on one side and the Demian coat of arms on the reverse. Glarunes are valuable as an international currency not only due to the value of the silver they are made from, but due to the many trade connections that the Crown Lands and its merchants posses across the world. 

Use by the Schtrünnem

The ubiquity of Glarunes across the world also makes them useful to agents of the Schtrünnem, the Demian spy network. When agents reach a safe house or meet an informant, they take a glarune with two knife marks on the coat side and hand it, head side up, to their informant or safe house overseer. The receiving agent will take the glarune, check the coat side, and recite a code phrase to confirm themselves as an agent of the Schtrünnem. That glarune will then be promptly disposed of to prevent discovery and the agents' work can begin with no bystanders thinking anything beyond a normal purchase had occurred, allowing agents to operate in plain sight.
