Vianne Tributaries Facility

The Vianne Tributaries Facility (VTF) is a research facility located in Vianne Tributaries, Voxelia. The Facility contains one of the largest particle accelerators developed in the Manifold Sky setting, with one of the first experiments conducted at the facility resulting in the accidental creation of the Menger Catalyst.

Purpose / Function

The purpose of the VTF is to study high-energy phenomena, and radiation in general, in a controlled environment. The facility is also involved with secret national defense projects, including the study of the Menger Catalyst.

Alterations

Over the facility's ten year history, numerous advancements in sensor and computation technology have taken place. The equipment for generating high-energy particles and detecting their collision products has been upgraded to keep up with the state-of-the-art. The accidental creation of the Menger Catalyst has requried the creation of a shielded electrostatic confinement chamber and special manipulation waldoes, as the Catalyst has destructive effects on any physical material it touches. Renovations for creature comforts have fallen behind somewhat, with the decor of the surface facilities reflecting a distinctly mid-9980s aesthetic sensibility.

Architecture

The VTF is mostly located underground with the exception of a single nondescript surface building containing a reception area, dormitories, and classrooms. The control room, hot labs, and accelerator tunnels - the last of which encircles almost the entire town - are located in shielded concrete-reinforced bunkers about 100ft below ground. Two funiculars and an emergency pedestrian ramp connect the surface facility with the underground facilities. The subterranean spaces are notably stark and devoid of ornamentation, resembling a military bunker more than a place of academic study.

Defenses

The security at the VTF is relatively tight, as, while it is an academic facility, the experiments conducted there are dangerous due to the radiation produced.   The surface structure is cordoned off with chain link fences topped with cantina wire, and visitors must be inspected at a gatehouse for identification and contraband detection purposes. The cement bunkers would nominally provide protection against excavation along the length of the tunnels, but just in case, seismic sensors are laid out just under the ground along the length of the tunnels to detect such forced intrusion methods.

Tourism

Only post-secondary students, scientists, and government officials are allowed in the Vianne Tributaries Facility, and even then only after a security clearance background check and on an as-needed basis. More than a few members of the faculty are, in fact, embedded bard-recursant or counterintelligence trainees from the Voxelia College of Bards.
