Register of Trade Routes

The Guild Register of Trade Routes - abbreviated GRTR, Register or GaRTeR for short - is a document that is often paired with the current Hazard Index for determining the going rates of Navigator's Guild services as expressed on a Guild Contract Card. Unlike with the Hazard Index, however, a route that appears almost entirely in the Register is cheaper than other routes due to a recognized expediency and relative lack of hazardous conditions along the way. For this reason, a 'registered' route is subject to favorable flat rates, making it a popular option for commercial and recreational service.

Document Structure

Publication Status

Like the Hazard Index, the GaRTeR is a physical document updated under the purview of the Guild Board of Trustees. However, by its very nature, a route's appearance on the Register is unlikely to change in the near-term, so such updates are not a regular affair. Updated documentation is pushed to all Guild halls and remote offices through RadNet encryptions first before being published in more permanent charts.

Historical Details

Background

Routes appear on the Guild Register of Trade Routes based on a combination of historical precedent, exploration, and current observations of the state of affairs in the Manifold Sky. Appearance on the Register is no guarantee that a route will be safe at all times and under all conditions, but it does suggest that the journey is statistially unlikey to be interrupted.

Public Reaction

Routes found on the Register of Trade Routes are among the most likely to be recognized by everyday people in the Manifold Sky setting. While the Guild is typically loathe to share knowledge that might be considered 'trade secrets' in their line of work, registered routes become well-known by dint of being well-traveled and intimately tied to tourism and commercial shipping industries. Registration of a route may also bring a degree of public controversy, as intentionally snubbing one region in favor of another - whether justified, as with war zones, or not - can give the perception of favoritism that runs counter to the Guild's much-vaunted non-partisan nature.
