Sqʷn̓ečstm

The Sqʷn̓ečstm are a race of playful otters that love to frolic in the water and play tricks on unsuspecting travellers. Their small size lends themselves well to this as they can get into places that other races cannot. Many Sqʷn̓ečstm prefer to live their own way, isolated from all but their closest friends and familly. This combined with their trickster nature has caused them to develop an unwelcome reputation among the other races of Malplenan.   The majority of the Sqʷn̓ečstm can be found in Mel̓ux̌aca’, which is a forested nation that they run south of the T̍lim̍ Qul Mountains. They are also common to find working with the Khünd Ajil, both in the Confederacy of Khünd Ajil but also around the world due to their symbiotic nature and The Fishing Famine. They are also well travelled on their own and are often found wherever there are bodies of water.

Basic Information

Anatomy

River Otters.
Their fur is coloured and can be patterned in various ways. Common colours are various shades of brown, black and white, but many other colours also exist. Common patterns found are two tones with the belly or the face as the second colour. Their fur is very dense and they need to maintain and groom it very well to maintain its waterproof seal so that they can stay warm in the water.   They have natural pockets under their armpits due to both their dense fur and skin flaps. This allows them to store many small items or food for later use or consumption.   They are generally smaller creatures, averaging 3 - 4 ft in length and 1 ft in height with a 1.5 - 2 ft long tail. However, they are hefty for their size, weighing in at 30 - 40 lbs. However, their size and weight varies about 50% in each direction. They are very long for their height and look like they are slinking everywhere they go.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Sqʷn̓ečstm are largely carniverous and get most of their nutrition from fish, crustaceans, insects, birds and other small mammals. However, they enjoy many other foods, including fruit, berries and vegetables and eat a wide variety of foods for pleasure.
