Pelgan College of Magic

The College mirrors its sister, First Mages College of Zentru , in many ways. It is considered to be the pinicle of magical education in Tenebrosia (even if the only official one).   The main difference between the two colleges is the relationships with the local government. The every single one of the members of The Council are also members of the Pelgan College. In reality, its the college that rules, although the Council is the face of the power.

Control Over Magic

The College seeks to do more than collect magical knowledge, they wish to control it. What started as a need to control the possible rampancy of magic developed into a method for those elite mages to college and increase their own power. This means they seek out any and all sources of it including artifacts, runes, natural born sorcerers, and apostate mages. The Keepers of Secrets seek out those who use magic and either bring them into the college, or they ensure they are no longer a threat to the city or the powers in place.

A Collection of Secrets

The danger of magic is always present in both destructive and manipulative forms. Many Grandmasters develop a paranoia as their are constant attempts to subtley steal the magical knowledge from each other. Many Grandmasters have unique spells and abilities that they have not written down but instead carefully select who will be their successor. Sometimes a mage will die without having passed on his unique knowledge and his magical knowledge is at that time lost.   This secrecy and risk of losing magical knowledge caused the college to dedicate several mages to the role of Archivist . These mages spend much of their time recording the individual findings of mages and their experiments, but this does not keep them from their own work and advancements.

A Split in Class

Those who are sorcerers from non-noble families or those who have made enemies of the grandmages find themselves in an unfavorable spot. Once one becomes an official mage, you are "offered" the opportunity to become a Craftsman's aid . The individual then is sent to work with a blacksmith, craftsman, or if the punishment is particularly harsh, the Crestrock Mine . Each of these places Dragon Ore needs a mage to manipulate it and this has become the standard method of filling that role.

Structure

The college reflect their sister organization, the First Mages College of Zentru .   The tiers of rank are and follow:
  1. Archmagus - The Grand Mage who heads the college and is the representative on The Council . Arguably the most influential of the council members.
  2. Grand Mage - the highest level of magical prowess recognized by the colleges as set forth by the First College. These members are usually the ones who are offered the more privileged roles such as diplomatic dignitary to Zentru.
  3. Mage - a fully recognize practitioner of magic. At this level one is expected to be able to cast at least one spell reliably. At this level the practitioner is free to experiment with magical ideas, theories, and experiments without official written consent of the college. Depending on social status, one might be offered more advanced training by a Grand mage or be suggested for specific roles such as Craftsman's aid .
  4. Acolyte - a title given to an active student. Although it is not directly said, only those who are considered to have any real potential are even given this title.
  5. Initiate - this title is usually given to those noble or wealthy member who want to learn magic but are considered incapable or thought to never produce any actual potential.
There is one title that exists outside of the structure, which is the Rune Mage . This is a rather new development as the college currently only has a handful of runes in their current possession.   All the acolytes and initiates are trained by dedicated mages, those who feel it is their calling to teach... or are informed that it is by the Archmagus . Once attaining the rank of "Mage" (or if you are a favored pupil), you can learn under a Grandmaster as a tutor. This has become the primary way that a mage passes his unique magical secrets on.

Culture

The College is very much focused on the academic study of magic and all its forms including spells and artifacts. Research, discovery, ingenuity: all things the college values.   Respect for the ranks above you is held to be proper etiquette. To disrespect those who are considered superior to you is something that will invite a public shaming.   The major taboo that has been recently discovered is that of Void magic . If one is found to be practicing this corrupting magic, you are brought before the Archmagus  and judgement is enacted, usually a sever sentence which has included death.

Public Agenda

The College has the mission of collecting as much magical knowledge as possible and teaching the future generations of mages.

In knowledge is power to change the world

The relationship between the two colleges is one of friendship and cooperation. There is still the occasional smuggling of magical artifacts to the mainland and sometimes a mage from one college is a little arrogant when dealing with the other (assuming superiority for one reason or another). The two generally work together to amass more knowledge.

The nobles are the only ones with a guaranteed way into the college... Money.
