Talwyn Nightingale Character in Malgrave | World Anvil

Talwyn Nightingale

Talwyn is a half-elf ranger who appears in several stories of Malgrave's history. She is played by I.W.

Description

Appearance

As a half-elf, Talwyn is a little under five and a half feet tall. She has an olive skin tone and dark brown hair that she ties in a high ponytail while letting her bangs hang and frame her face. Her eyes are apple green that gleam with an intensity that's hard to miss. Several fading scars can be seen on any exposed skin, including on her face, notably across her cheek and a second through her lip, showing a life of hardship. Most of her clothing is very frayed and worn, fitting tightly as if too small for her rather than by being a style choice. The knees of her pants are completely worn away to nothing but holes. Adorning herself in studded leather armor, much of the belts and fastenings have extra holes she punched in herself to make it fit properly. Unlike her clothing, it seems to be too big for her frame. She has a bow and a quiver of arrows, as well as knives tucked into her worn and cracked boots. Her gloves are missing the tips of the index and middle finger like many professional archers. Talwyn's posture suggests a confidence the wise can see through as a bravado.

Personality

Talwyn is trapped between two worlds, being older than she looks, but immature for her age by human standards. She tends to have a tomboy attitude that is emphasized by the chip on her shoulder. Quick to anger, she is often defensive when looked down upon. This gives her a bit of an abrasive personality towards most people. When shown compassion though, she will develop a strong loyalty to the ones that do. This was most noticeable when she refused to give up the location or plans of the people in the coupe operation, knowing she would die, despite only knowing most of them for a few hours. As she's grown as a person, much of her bitterness has been replaced with self doubt and uncertainty with her dream of becoming a full fledged member of her thieves' guild not really fiiting what she hoped for.

Biography

Background

When she was born, Talwyn was brought to an orphanage in Westfall. She spent her entire childhood being passed up and ignored for human children by the people that would come to adopt. With a policy of only keeping children until they were twelve years old, she was told to leave when her time came to a close. With her elven blood, she still looked like she would have still been a toddler if she had been human. She tried fending for herself by taking food out of trash bins, only to be made fun of or chased away by the now adults she had been raised with in the orphanage.   Eventually, a man known as The Caretaker found her and took her in, providing her with food and shelter in a hidden area beneath Westfall. There she began to learn the ways of the thieves' guild with other abandoned children. Eventually she was induced into The Vermin, the crime syndicate operating out of Westfall. With her growing bitterness to how the world had treated her, Talwyn joined the part of the organization that offered its members as thugs for hire, the Alley Cats. She was typically a runner of goods due to her small stature, rather than assisting with breaking and entering jobs.

History

Talwyn has played a minor part in a few of the events that have taken place in Malgrave during the early parts of the Age of Tranquility. She was tasked with delivering a Rod of Rulership to General Arseny Vadima in Dugafjord on behalf of The Vermin. This venture had her meet with Jacques De Rues while using the alias Jackson Corbet and crossing paths with the Undesirables. After her delivery, she was held hostage by General Vadima until her rescue. The experience made her feel as though The Vermin treated her as expendable, while also being shown care and consideration from Jacques. She ultimately would join Jacques in his attempt to overthrow the leaders of the syndicate they were both part of. Despite her role in the coup, most members of the guild would continue to look down upon her. After helping to take down the Rakshasa that had paid for the former leader to shift focus, she would ultimately move on from Westfall and join the Sisters of the Sea under the recommendation of Audacity.

Relationships

Jacques De Rues

A poor first impression was made when Jacques tracked Talwyn down to take the Rod of Rulership from her. Knowing her life would be in danger with the way The Vermin had been run lately, Jacques changed his mind and encouraged her to complete her delivery and said that he'd find a different way to get it later. This care for her wellbeing immediately gained the normally haughty half-elf's trust. She has since sworn that if Jacques ever needs help, she would be there. Jacque himself seems to have taken some sort of fostering role for her, making her a major part of his plans to overthrow White Feather and rescuing her from Tom when the tiefling was about to kill her, despite the risk of ruining the entire coupe. After their success, Jacques invited her into the White Hats, fulfilling a lifelong dream of hers since leaving the orphanage. He would eventually try and offer for her to become his partner, but she would ultimately turn him down in hopes of making a fresh start away from those that knew her. Talwyn still takes every opportunity she can to visit Jacques when docked near Westfall.

The Caretaker

Despite being someone who cared for Talwyn more than anyone else ever had, the two have a very strained relationship. An astute person or a parent would easily gather that he tells her things she needs to hear and not what she wants to hear. Talwyn was led to believe that this was The Caretaker trying to control her and make her do what he wanted, driving the final wedge between them when he tried to convince her to leave the Alley Cats. Regardless, she does still bring gifts and supplies for The Caretaker and the children being cared for, usually trying to be unseen when doing so.

Tom Cat

The two seemed to have had a decent working relationship for a time that tended to be in Tom's advantage. The tiefling fed her anger, slowly encouraging her towards more violent behavior and the belief that everyone either deserves it or is against her. Talwyn's assignment to run the Rod of Rulership seems to have disillusioned her of Tom's influence with it being clear, after the fact, it was not expected for her to survive. It was later revealed that Tom's abuse went beyond manipulation. He had been physically abusive and potentially more, shown by Talwyn's fear when it was suggested Audacity try and seduce him to isolate him for ambush, stating that Tom 'takes what he wants and he doesn't ask' to try and talk her out of it. It would eventually become clear that this spiteful personality within her that he nurtured, along with the way he treated her, had made Talwyn a very unpopular member of The Vermin.
