History
Ruanon, is the southernmost province of Sommerlund, south of Moytura. It was formerly part of Cloeasia until MS 3004, when it was divided between Cloeasia, the Wildlands, Lyris and Casiorn.
Following the Battle of Moytura Pass, earthquakes turned the region into a complete wasteland. It was reclaimed after MS 3799 by King Bern I of Sommerlund. It has since remained a province of Sommerlund, but its location close to the Maakengorge, the Wildlands, and the Stornlands has made it one of Sommerlund's most eventful provinces.
Timberworkers from Holmgard settled in the region, taking advantage of its quality hardwoods. Their work cleared a path to an outpost called Maaken on the border with Lyris. By MS 3849, Maaken had become a town. However, in MS 3959, a second set of earthquakes rocked the region, and the Maakengorge lengthened two hundred meters further, destroying Maaken. This forced a new construction of a trade road from Ruanon to Casiorn, which was completed in MS 3961.
Eshnar, established in MS 3808, defended against the bandits on Ruanon's east side. However, attacks became so frequent, King Frey II forbade all travel in MS 4221, and Eshnar was placed under a command of a Sheriff, a unique Sommlending rank.
In MS 5054, the Vassagonian renegade Barraka led an army from the east invading and occupying Ruanon. Barraka did not bring enough troops to hold the city against a Sommerlund reprisal, but even he was taken aback when Lone Wolf entered the city a short 10 days later. Lone Wolf defeated Barraka at The Chasm of Doom.
Since then Ruanon has become an ever more fortified city, with a series of towns built to the east to provide warning and military support should danger ever come again from Vassagonia. With watchtowers to the west to watch for aggression from the Darklands, Ruanon has never been more safe.

Geography
Ruanon is the southern-most province of Sommerlund, south of Moytura. The two are linked by the Ruanon Pike, a narrow and dangerous strip of land bordering the Wildlands. Ruanon juts out from the Ruanon Pike, with a narrow strip north of the Maaken Range, following the Maakenmire, before joining over to the Maakengorge and looping back towards the Southern Durncrag Mountains. Bordered by the wilderness of the Wildlands to the north, the Maakenmire Swamp to the east, and the Maakengorge to the south, Ruanon is surrounded by dangerous neighbors. The Maakenmire is the source of the River Xane which flows through the province, passing just north of Ruanon Town, where it leads to the the Durncrag Mountains. The Maaken Mines sit in the Maaken Range, and tributaries of the River Xane pass through the mines, making them dangerous.
Ruanon possesses rich forests, with its Redwood trees noted for their hardness. These trees formed the basis of Ruanon's initial economy. The south of Ruanon also contains much arable farmland, now mostly private estates formed by families who became rich during the Gold Rush of Ruanon.

Natural Resources
The vast majority of Ruanon's economy is mining from the Maaken mines, where gold, iron and copper are mined. In MS 5000, this constituted 90% of Ruanon's economic activity. The remaining 10% is mostly based around exporting wood from its hardwood forests. Ruanon also possesses rich soil, producing cattle and foodstuffs, although most of these goods are consumed within Ruanon.
