Falhakia

Falhakia is one of the oldest nations in Irralish, founded only a couple of decades after the destruction of Thurid. Setting off from Kolli, settlers established a capital at Millow. Expanding across Lake Ryna, Falhakian's increased their influence as the swamp receded over the next century or so. This brought them into conflict with the native serpentfolk tribes that inhabited draconic ruins. Defeating these tribes and pushing them back allowed Falhakia to establish control of Shadow.
The empire had expanded enough at this point that a new capital was determined to be required. Queen Elide Gridemo, the fourth ruler of Falhakia, lead the exploration to find the site of the new capital and was in charge of the defensive force. The site of the future capital was identified and a camp was struck. Unfortunately, before a defensive perimeter was completed a herd of migrating iguanadon were sighted. Gridemo charged out with her troops to divert their path and successfully felled several of the beasts. As she was caring for the wounded, a scavenging tyrannosaurus emerged from the forest and attacked. Gridemo was slain buying time for her people to escape. In her honour, the new capital was named Gridemono and a statue to her looks over the south gate towards the hill where she passed. All Falhakian cities and towns are built with strong walls to ensure that Gridemo's sacrifice is not required again.
Falhakia has emerged as a strong, reliable presence in central Irralish and has produced many great heroes that have fought against the beasts to tame the surrounding wilderness. Falhakians value the strength of powerful warrior rulers that can defend them from invasion, both from nation and monster alike.
Falhakian monarchy is hereditary, but most often is passed to an adopted child. This was a custom established early on in the nation when the small population of nobles presented a high risk of inbreeding. Most monarchs will adopt 2-4 children of other ancestries and may or may not have biological children of their own as well. All these children are well educated and trained in the necessary skills for leadership. Those that do not ascend the throne typically end up as military leaders, scholars or high priests.

Structure

The king or queen of Falhakia is the autocratic ruler of the nation. A small council of advisors support the ruler with managing the kingdom. Below the ruler an array of dukes, duchesses and lesser nobles administer the land and collect taxes from the populace.

Demography and Population

Falhakia is a diversely populated nation. The largest demographic is human, followed by dwarves, elves, halflings, gnomes and orcs. Goblins are not uncommon in Falhakia either. Catfolk, shoony, trox and hobgoblins are rarer but still found in most settlements of a reasonable size.   Falhakia is home to over half a million people, making it the fourth most populated nation on Irralish after Zad, Kudhia and Smot.

Foreign Relations

Falhakia has good relations with Kudhia, another early nation founded soon after the destruction of Thurid. Bangallia and Falhakia have robust trade relations along the Qytha River, however industrial developments in Falhakia have negative downstream effects on Bangallian farmers which has caused tensions to rise.   Falhakia avoids taking sides in the Anosia-Sena conflicts but keeps a close eye on the situation as many refugees flee northward along the Qytha river.   Gaucia, across the northern mountains, is a close ally of Falhakia. Gaucia is a recipient of many of Falhakia's mineral exports and provides gnomish expertise in to help extract the rich deposits. Smot and Falhakia generally get along, and their shared distrust of Ladowvault has only brought them closer in recent decades.   Loron and Falhakia share common values, so despite a significant border, conflicts are rare. Trade along their shared rivers is common.   Falhakia and Ladowvault have a tense relationship due to the latter's treatment of non-humans. A newer nation, Ladowvault is expanding around Lake Ryna and has taken control of several Falhakian settlements.
