Welcome to Maerl

The City of Gathetoken is the starting location for the world of Maerl. This city is home. With under 10,000 inhabitants it is a city, but not a huge one. Having said that, it is the city of the Kingdom of Bytyr and, as such, the centre of its inhabitants' world.

Basis of the World

As every inhabitant will know, the world is made up of two parts - the part that is everyday and the part that is only possible with the help of the gods and spirits and magic. The world is made of Runes and those that can manipulate those @Runes can work stuff so much better. Making a fire is OK - but a fire blessed by the gods of fire works so much more predictably. A hunter may shoot, but the arrow will fly more accurately with magical help. A cook may throw ingredients in a pan, but they will taste better if the forager collected them with the help of the spirits of field and wood, and the cooking was properly blessed.

And the spirits of the Aethyr are everywhere. You have your own spirit, but around the world are those of streams, trees, hearths, and families. Not all are friendly and not all are helpful and knowing which is which is important!

Over all of this sit the gods. The small players in the world hope to avoid notice and offer distractions to make the gods look elsewhere. The great seek notice and desire the leverage to push the gods as they desire.
