Eastern Delta

The Eastern Delta is in constant flux. The low lying mountains and hills of the old landscape were flooded out long ago by the onset of changing climates. The land is now dotted with steep smooth stone cliffs, muddy jungles that rise up from the steamy tributary system and lakes. Ancient sandstone temples from a time long before OldCiv are lost in the thick jungles and under the muddy waters of the Delta rivers. With the river system in constant flux, flooding out even the thickest jungle, building on land would be foolish. The inhabitants of the Delta have taken to living on floating villages. These villages will migrate along the river system, sometimes 'parking' for long periods in a single spot.   The villages sustain themselves off diets of fish along with small plots or cages dragged behind boats or homes to farm plants. Rarely do the villagers go into the jungles, for they are filled with poisonous creatures and other deadly beasts. Such ventures are generally for retrieving wood and building supplies. Such ventures conclude before dusk falls not only to avoid poisonous serpents and spiders but also superstition holds that the jungles are full of ghosts.   Indeed the belief of such otherworldly spirits, generally unpredictable in nature, is common to denizens of the Delta. Ghosts that inhabit the land are seen as universally hostile and dangerous whereas the spirits of the water, or the Drowned Ones, are unpredictable as the storms but can be appeased with prayer and offerings. Certain specific Drowned Ones(Rough Translation) are named, and even become mascots of belief for the villages. Villagers pay homage to spirits, both familial and community guardians, in the form of icons.   While the specific ecology of certain villages vary, certain practices persist universally. Icon types vary from village to village from ceramic figures, to paintings, to abstract symbols(least common), and dolls. Rarer are relic artifacts said to be the remains or items belonging to Drowned Ones in life. These relics are guarded possessively. The belief that persists that when the world ended, there were a great many cities that flooded and now rest beneath the muddy waters of the rivers. The population killed in the floods died so violently they became ghosts. The Drowned ones are not viewed as universally benevolent and are often destructive, but may offer aid if appeased with tribute. There are no centralized religious systems in terms of priests.   Houses are often painted bright colors that stand out against the river waters. The color is diluted from different muds strained up from the rivers and treated with a chemical compound. Day to day activities are carried out on boats. There are even boats doubling as 'food trucks' of OldCiv. Everything that a village could need floats on the villages. Locals of the region favor loose brightly colored clothes. Electric power to the houses is sustained off of generators fed by the fatty oils of the Cá Thùng, a type of carp native to the river Delta.   Fish of the Delta often grow to huge size, particularly carp types that feed in the regularly flooded jungles. Most fish are benign, but some can swallow a man whole, generally catfish types. Children swimming in open water is not advisable. The rivers are between six and fifteen miles wide in most places but can bulge out to much more than that in the rainy season. Lakes pocket the area between the tributaries ranging from thirty miles to one hundred and thirty miles across in surface area alone. The largest of these lakes is known as Hpaan Painlaal is 15,000 miles wide in the dry season.
