Activated Machines

Most pieces of technology in Lyx are repurposed from the remains of ancient parts of left-over machines that have been scavenged and repaired. The composition of these machines can vary wildly in origin, but most are pulled from similar sources that have are all derived from a modular technology used in the First Era: highly advanced states of matter composed partially of nanites with a unified system that can innately interface with other machines of its kind. Over a long enough timeline, and with enough experience to form the necessary pathways in its programming, these machines can achieve basic sentience, referred to as an Activated Machine.
