Character Backgrounds

Every story has a beginning. A character's background reveals where he or she came from, his or her place in the world, and how they developed their ambitions and the skills to attain them..  

Your Background

  When you begin your adventure, you choose a location from the world map, as well as a suggested starting background to match that location. Each suggested background will naturally lead to a different flavor of game, from swashbuckling on the high seas, to palace intrigue, to exploring ancient ruins.   Instead of picking one of the suggested locations, you can also suggest a custom starting location and background to the GM. You should also tell the GM if there’s a specific Character Class or organization you’re interested in joining.   1) Child of the Wilderness Start north of Gwyn - You grew up in a small home deep in the forest. This start naturally leads to a wilderness exploration adventure across the deep forests of central Londolon.   Suggested starting classes: Warrior, Priest   Possible affiliations: The Brotherhood of Rangers, The Druidic Order of Londolon, The Royal Family of Brannat, The Royal Family of Berun   2) Child of the Sea Start in Breta - You grew up in one of the largest coastal ports in Londolon. This start naturally leads to an exploration adventure across the blue seas of Londolon.   Suggested starting classes: Warrior, Rogue   Possible affiliations: The Brotherhood of Rangers, The Columia Explorer company   3) Child of the Slums Start in Ile de Fransond - You grew up as an orphan on the streets of Ile de Fransond, the largest and most cosmopolitan city in all of known Londolon. This start naturally leads to an adventure focused on class struggle, political intrigue, and warring kingdoms.   Suggested starting classes: Rogue, Warrior   Possible Affiliations: Le Guild Cabaret, The Royal Family of Fransond, The Band of the Red Eagle   4) Child of the Academy Start in Sax - You were orphaned as a baby, but adopted and raised by Archbishop Adolph Kleinratz, Dean of the Imperial University in Sax. This start naturally leads to an adventure focused on powerful secrets and forbidden research.   Suggested starting classes: Priest, Warrior   Possible Affiliations: The Church Monastic Order, The Weavers Society, The Band of the Red Eagle   5) Child of the Nobility Start in Venna - You were raised as the privileged son or daughter of a noble house in the Holy Empire of Detchlund, trained from birth to expand the holdings and prestige of your house. This start naturally leads to an adventure focused on the bonds of family, political rivalry, and royal court intrigue.   Suggested starting classes: Warrior, Rogue   Possible Affiliations: A noble family of Detchlund (you get to create your family’s crest and history with the GM!), The Spelunkers Explorer Company   6) Child of the Conquista Start in Casta la Roca - You were raised on the Southern frontier of known Londolon, in the new Kingdom of Espanond. This start naturally leads to a military campaign to claim land inhabited by the nomads of the southern continent.   Suggested starting classes: Warrior   Possible Affiliations: The Royal Family of Espanond, The Church Order of Holy Knights   7) Child of the Priesthood Start in Ora - You were raised as an orphan and inducted into the Holy Church priesthood. This start naturally leads to an adventure centered on secret plots, dark conspiracies and secret knowledge.   Suggested starting classes: Priest, Warrior   Possible Affiliations: The Church order of Monks, The Church order of Holy Knights, The Church Inquisition   8) Child of the Frontier Start in Kev - You were raised on a homestead on the Eastern frontier of known Londolon. This start naturally leads to a wilderness exploration adventure into the unknown across the wide steppes of Eastern Londolon.   Suggested starting classes: Tribal Warrior, Priest   Possible Affiliations: The Brotherhood of Rangers, The Byzan Church, The Druidic Order of Londolon, The Shaman Kings   9) Child of the Market Start in Verra or Byza - You were raised as the son or daughter of wealthy merchants. This start naturally leads to an adventure focused on piracy, trade, and treasure hunting.   Suggested starting classes: Rogue, Warrior   Possible Affiliations: The Merchant Guild of Verra, The Prokop Pirates   10) Child of the Prophet Start in Constantium - Orphaned in a newly-conquered city, you bear witness to the followers of Moham preaching knowledge. This start naturally leads to an adventure focused on treasure hunting and magic.   Suggested starting classes: Warrior, Rogue, Priest   Possible affiliations: The Yeniceri Corps, Silk Caravan Merchants, The Disciples of Moham   11) Child of the Tribe Start in the jungles of the southern continent, the tundra of the eastern wastes, or the arctic north - You were raised as a member of one of the nomadic tribes of Londolon. This start naturally leads to an adventure focused on druidic mysticism and tribal honor.   Suggested starting classes: Warrior, Priest   Possible affiliations: The Druidic Order of Londolon, The Shaman Kings  

Shaping Your Character's Personality

  Write down at least one personality trait that developed as a result of experiences associated with your character's background. Personality traits are small, simple characteristics that set your character apart from others. Examples might include:  
  • Hopeless romantic
  • Loves to be the center of attention
  • Perfectionist
  • Quick temper
  • Hates seeing others in pain
  • Happy-go-lucky
  Ideals: Write down at least one ideal that your character now holds as a result of his or her experiences. Ideals are the things you believe in most strongly, that motivate you. Examples might include:  
  • Tradition
  • Power
  • Kindness
  • Honesty
  • Freedom
  • Authority
  Bonds: Write down at least one bond that developed as a result of your character’s experiences. Bonds are your connections to people, places, and events in the world. Examples might include:  
  • An important mentor
  • An unpaid debt
  • Family relationships
  • Revenge for past grievances
  • A prophecy unfulfilled
  • An inheritance unclaimed
  Flaws: Write down at least one personality flaw that developed as a result of your character’s experiences. A flaw represents a self-destructive pattern of behavior, a vice or weakness in your character. Examples might include:  
  • Easily seduced
  • Gullible
  • Excessive greed
  • Pride
  • Hides the real you from others
  • Has trouble focusing
  • Cowardice
