Aelstir
The Aelstir is a faction dedicated to protecting humanoid civilizations from the unintended destruction caused by the actions of the elemental Genies. While the Aelstir deeply respect the genies' mission to maintain elemental balance, they view it as their duty to temper the collateral harm that these immense forces can cause to settlements, cultures, and ecosystems.
Philosophy
The Aelstir hold that the genies are vital to the natural order but operate on a scale beyond mortal considerations, often indifferent to the fragility of civilizations. The faction sees itself as a necessary counterbalance, working to protect life and harmony without defying the genies outright. Their guiding principle, “In Service to Life,” reflects their commitment to preserving existence while respecting the genies’ divine mandate.
Membership
The Aelstir welcome members from all walks of life, emphasizing diversity to match the wide range of challenges they face. The more common members include:
- Eladrin: As beings born from nature, the Eladrin bring wisdom and a deep connection to elemental forces, making them key negotiators and spiritual guides within the faction.
- Druids: With their mastery over nature, druids act as mediators between elemental forces and mortal life, advising the Aelstir on natural phenomena.
- Monks: Monks trained in the elemental disciplines provide martial expertise and the ability to mitigate destructive forces.
Tactics and Operations
- Protection: Aelstir intervene during elemental upheavals to safeguard lives and mitigate damage. For instance, when Izelphur’s flames rage too close to a city, druids might summon rain, while monks evacuate the populace.
- Defensive Engineering: The Aelstir construct barriers, diversion channels, and wards to shield vulnerable settlements.
- Lorekeeping: The Aelstir maintain vast archives of lore on the genies’ patterns, ensuring that future generations are equipped to anticipate their actions.
Structure
The Aelstir are decentralized, with independent chapters called Sanctuaries located in regions prone to elemental disturbances. Each Sanctuary operates autonomously under the guidance of a Aelstir Elder, a leader chosen for their experience and elemental knowledge. These elders communicate through enchanted stones crafted by Aelstir artificers.
Additionally, dedicated Aelstir pursue the Genies as they cross the world. These Watchers live as nomads as they follow the Genies, watching for any early indication of an impending disaster. This is a difficult lifestyle, and watchers are cycled out as possible from the nearest Sanctuary when the chase becomes to difficult.
Historical Conflicts
The Aelstir have played a key role in minimizing the impact of several elemental disasters:
- The Burning of Valehaven: Izelphur’s purifying flames once threatened the city of Valehaven. Aelstir diverted the wildfire with carefully controlled burns and protective wards, saving the city while preserving the balance Izelphur demanded.
- The Deluge of @Tsorfollas: When Maridyn unleashed a torrential storm to restore an overdrawn aquifer, the Aelstir evacuated riverside communities and built temporary levees to prevent catastrophic flooding.
- The Quake of the Eastern Spine: Thalugarn’s wrath over a mining operation destabilized the region, threatening the nearby dwarven hold of Bunkuhm. Aelstir evacuated the populace and redirected the quake’s energy through geomantic rituals.
Allies and Challenges
The Aelstir often find allies among local communities, druids, and other defenders of life. However, they face resistance from factions that exploit elemental resources for profit, as well as skepticism from those who believe their efforts are futile against the overwhelming power of the genies.
