Bunkuhm
Nestled deep within the craggy heart of Aeshethar's mountain ranges, Bunkuhm stands as a sanctuary of wisdom, tradition, and dwarven spirituality. Though smaller than Kirach, the political and military heart of the Dwarves, Bunkuhm is no less significant. It is a realm where the past is revered, the present is guided by discipline, and the Soulstone-rich depths shape both the land and its people.
Government
Bunkuhm is ruled by King Durrok Stoneheart, a monarch whose name is synonymous with unwavering resolve and spiritual insight. Unlike the more expansionist and industrious rulers of Kirach, Durrok’s focus is on preserving the heart of dwarven culture—strengthening the mind and soul as much as the hammer and forge. He is not merely a king but a keeper of wisdom, a leader who weighs every decision with patience and caution. The Council of Elders, composed of scholars, monks, and master artisans, aids him in maintaining the kingdom’s balance between the material and the spiritual.
Defences
Though Bunkuhm does not boast the standing army of Kirach, it is by no means defenseless. Its natural geography provides formidable protection, with sheer mountain cliffs and narrow tunnels making it nearly impenetrable. The Stoneheart Sentinels, an elite force of warrior-monks wielding weapons inlaid with soulstone, stand as its first and last line of defense. Their resilience in battle is legendary, their weapons humming with a resonance that allows them to strike with devastating force.
In times of great need, Bunkuhm can call upon Kirach for aid, though its leaders prefer to resolve conflicts through patience and diplomacy rather than open war.
Industry & Trade
While Kirach drives dwarven industry, Bunkuhm supplies the wisdom and the rare materials that make that industry possible. Beyond soulstone, Bunkuhm’s mines yield obsidian, deepcrystal, and rare enchanted metals known for their durability and magical affinity. Master artisans here focus not on mass production but on exquisite craftsmanship, creating weapons, armor, and runed relics of unparalleled quality. These goods, while fewer in number, are sought after by the greatest warriors and enchanters of Aeshethar and beyond.
Despite its smaller scale, Bunkuhm is no stranger to trade. Merchants from Kirach, human kingdoms, and even distant lands brave the winding mountain roads to barter for its rare materials and artifacts. However, trade is carefully regulated by the king’s council—outsiders are allowed access only under strict terms, and raw soulstone is never sold beyond dwarven hands.
Assets
The Soulstone Veins
Bunkuhm’s most prized resource is soulstone, the rare and mystical mineral said to have been formed by the hands of Thalugarn, the genie who shaped the dwarves. Every dwarf carries a small core of soulstone within them from the moment they are carved into being, making the material sacred beyond measure. The Great Vein of Thalugarn, running through the heart of Bunkuhm, is the richest known source of soulstone in the world. It pulses with a faint inner light, said to resonate with the very essence of dwarven souls.
The harvesting of soulstone is conducted with great reverence, overseen by the Stonehearts—an ancient monastic order dedicated to preserving the balance between dwarves and their sacred lifeblood. The process is slow, ritualistic, and undertaken only when necessary, for it is believed that excessive extraction could sever the dwarves’ connection to Thalugarn.
Guilds and Factions
The Monasteries of Stone & Stillness
Dotted throughout Bunkuhm’s cavernous expanse are soulstone monasteries, places of meditation where dwarves sit in quiet contemplation, allowing the stone’s energies to flow through them. These monastic halls are some of the most hallowed places in all dwarven lands, their walls inscribed with runes of wisdom and their chambers echoing with low, harmonic chants. Many warriors and artisans journey here to center themselves before returning to their work, for it is said that a dwarven blade or construct forged with a soul at peace is mightier than one forged in haste.
Religion & Philosophy
Bunkuhm is the spiritual heart of dwarvenkind, where the teachings of Thalugarn are preserved in ancient stone tablets and passed down through oral tradition. Faith in the Divine is strong here, but unlike the militant zeal of some human kingdoms, dwarven worship is introspective, focusing on self-mastery, patience, and endurance. The Halls of Deep Reflection, a vast underground temple illuminated by the glow of living soulstone, serves as the center of religious life, drawing pilgrims from all dwarven lands.
