Scope
The motivation behind building Linebound
I am creating Linebound for the enjoyment of worldbuilding.
The goal of the project
The joy of creating something is mainly what I get out of it but sometime I will run a tabletop game in this setting using either Genesys of my new system. The game will be a grand adventure with small scale stories in a large scale world.
Linebound's Unique Selling point
This world of islands floating in the sky always expanding and progressing. New things are around every turn but magic shys away from civilization and can be difficult to find.
Theme
Genre
Linebound is a fantasy setting with technologically imbalanced societies. Magic exists but its keepers are incompatible with society and move away - and sometimes lash out - as it encroaches on their natural realms.
Reader Experience
Linebound should be wonderful - it should ask and answer "What is fantastic to people who live in a fantasy world?" - and for people who always want to see what is over the next hill - or behind the next cloud. There are lots of places to go, dangers to encounter, and learning to do.
Reader Tone
The skies of Linebound are bright but people sometimes dim that to a kind-of-bright. Below the unending storm, all bets are off and it is a place of twisted bodies and minds.
Recurring Themes
The following will be common ideas in Linebound:
- Distant places capture the hearts of adventurers.
- People stand up for people.
- Life finds a way - even in the darkest of places.
Character Agency
Characters are just people. They are not superheroes. They are not demigods. Just people. But people have the power to change the future, to change the hearts and the minds of others, and to make changes that will reverberate far into the future.
Focus
The societies of Linebound grapple with class and wealth. Some people always seek to be above others and while some societies have harsher conditions for those at the bottom than others, none are immune.
In this new era of exploration, technology - and magic - have the ability to shift the balance of power. It can improve the lives of the poor or topple nations.
People need food and they want luxuries. Agriculture, industry, and trade are among the most important things in the day-to-day lives of people. Conditions of work, the impacts of magic and technology, the whims of politicians, and the skirmishes of soldiers all impact these greatly.
Money makes the islands float as they say. The movement of wealth and of coin plays into the class, technology, and trade aspects of the setting in a way that is inseperable.
Knowledge is power and some people will do anything to get it. Not everyone is like the great explorers Darosi and Ryza who sought knowledge and adventure for the sake of knowledge and adventure.
Drama
Sky pirates are disrupting inter-island trade. How did they obtain so many skyships? When did they become so organized? What can be done about it?
The class and wealth crises in Burim are reaching a boiling point. The poor cannot continue to support the rich when they can no longer support themselves. The Muckdrudgers exist because they couldn't afford to live in the city any longer.
The new emperor of Bral seeks to gain the same glory as his predecessors and expand the nation. He and his skyknights may take to the skies once again.
Political instability is not an ideal situation for the Tech Priests. What will they do when their food supplies are threatened by strife on Breharan? Will they deploy their advanced technologies to secure their supplies?
Civilization is expanding throughout the skies. Many outposts have been established on islands across the skies. The fae do not hate people but they don't understand them. Fun can be dangerous, anger even more so.
The plights of individuals everywhere are the most important things in their lives that most people will never hear about. Will people intervene or leave them to their own small battles?
Access to knowledge is increasing but this can topple the order of society. What will happen with education? Will everyone get it? Only the wealthy?
