Pulley

Ingenious use of rope.

"Gersa! Not like that!"   "Not like what?"   "If you tie the rope like that someone is going to die."   "It is how I was shown to tie ropes."   "Tie it like this. Those people have no idea what they're talking about. These pulleys carry ten people at a time or large stones, that won't hold. Do you see it?"   "Yeah, like this no matter how hard you pull..."   "Exactly."

History

Within Grara, the earliest known use of pulleys was in Cliffside during the years of seasonal work in the Time of Rebuilding. It is likely that they were used earlier than that but there is no recorded use of them.
Outside of Grara, pulleys have long been in use on sailing ships and, more recently, skyships.

Utility

A pulley allows someone to lift or move something as if they were stronger than they are. Pulleys, blocks, and tackle allow the function of the sails of skyships which began the Time of Exploration.   By combining multiple pulleys in one system many things can be achieved. Importantly when lifting heavy loads, this reduces the strain on the rope.

In-Progress Article

This article is being worked on, perhaps not at this very moment, but it is being worked on.
A seemingly innocuous item made only of wood and rope is responsible for the world we live in today. It enables brave sky sailors to travel to far of islands, learn about the skies, and move people to live in places we have only seen in the distance. Closer to home it brings the workers up and the iron down in Cliffside.   I am, of course, speaking of the humble pulley.
