One of the most useful materials - useful both in the sense of being utilized and being multipurpose - is charcoal. And yet, as with the objects of focus in these chapters past, is often given the praise it deserves.
In this chapter we will delve into the production, use, and different types of charcoal. From fires to forges and blackpowder to pencils, charcoal enables this modern society.

Lighting Up The Forge

Charcoal is one of the few materials in the skies that can burn hot enough to work iron. This would raise the value or charcoal to ridiculous levels if it wasn't so easy to make and metals were not so rare.
Recent metallurgical research has found that the use of charcoal can increase the strength of iron when forged; this has been dubbed strongiron.

The Thunder of the Guns

Necessary in the creation of blackpowder, charcoal of certain types is sought after by skysailors and military men. Specifically, the wood of the Arshal Willow makes the most powerful blackpowder. This explosive substance also sees use in mining and the clearing of fields.

Putting Pencil to Paper

Anyone who has handled charcoal can tell you that it leaves a mark. Very quickly people realized it could be shaved down to a fine point and attached to a wooden shaft to use as a more precise writing implement that doesn't also dirty the hand.

In much of the Orthlands there is not much wood but the people have discovered that animal bones can also be transformed into charcoal. This allows them to stock up during the warmer seasons when animals are plenty so that they can stay warmer during the colder seasons.
