Anslak Vehicle in Linebound | World Anvil

Anslak

Captain Tuunal was worried. His fishing ship may now be a boat of war but his crew. His crew were still fishermen. He watched Aanaba as she notched an arrow and hid behind one of the wooden barriers that were installed.   The ship on the horizon hadn't acknowledged their presence and that was the most worrying. They couldn't make out armaments at this distance but it seemed to be a Zeedan vessel. No cannons meant this might end with no deaths.   That was something to be grateful for but still, he would rather be catching fish.

History

Anslak translates as 'boat of war'. These vessels were not designed with battle in mind. Each anslak was once a fishing boat. To defend the fishing waters they had wooden walls added to protect sailors and soldiers from enemy arrows. One anslak has never sunk another, not directly. The boats are too valuable due to the scarcity of wood on the archipelago. Due to this most battles between anslak end with one being captured. Battles usually begin with volleys of arrows attempting to weaken soldier ranks or take out sailors making the vessel vulnerable to boarding. After the nations of Tamm and Zeed made peace most of the warships had defenses removed and returned to fishing. A small number of the vessels were kept as defenses to protect the resources of the archipelago from outside nations.

Propulsion

Anslak are propelled by sails and oars.

Weapons & Armament

Wood is rare on the archipelago so ships are not armed with cannons even after the introduction of gunpowder, the ships are too valuable to destroy.

Armor and defense

Additional wooden barriers have been added to protect the crew from volleys of arrows.

Communication Tools & Systems

As with most ships different flags are used as signals.
