Iridium-Kraak-Tak - Crabfolk
Basic Information
Anatomy
Kraak-Taks are 2 to 3 meters tall humanoid crustaceans. They may come in many forms: some resemble a large and stuffy crab with huge pinch-form claw hands; some are tall and long like a lobster, even having tails. They all have sensory antennae and a rigid exoskeleton.
Growth Rate & Stages
Kraak-Taks are born from eggs that need to be laid underwater. The younglins are called larvae nauplii and they go through metamorphosis when they reach around 25 years. During that process, their anatomy and morphology change severely, becoming taller and mature creatures at the end of it.
Ecology and Habitats
Kraak-Taks live in the deepest cave systems (depths range from 1000 to 5000 meters below sea-level) of the oceans (specially in The Magical Sea). Their strong carapaces allows them to withstand the immense pressure that is constantly trying to compress every being that dwells in these darkened waters and caves.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Most Kraak-Tak are carnivorous predators, having shrimp amongst their main diet.
Biological Cycle
Upon reaching adulthood, Kraak-Taks change carapace with a frequency of around 10 years. They don't shed their old one. Instead, it is absorbed and its nutrients/elements are used to build up the new one (which takes about a month) The Kraak-Taks need to go to the surface in order to make this exchange, since it would not withstand the pressure of the depths without its exoskeleton.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Kraak-Taks live amongst the millions in a single cave system. Those millions are normally devided amongst different tribes, with different cultures and traditions. However, a Queen may be selected by the leaders of all the tribes in times of need.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
The carapace of a Kraak-Tak can be used to craft lighter (yet just as resistant) protective armor.
Facial characteristics
Kraak-Taks do not have regular mouths, but a pair of Maxilipedes. Their eyes are located in the end of a long pedunculum.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Kraak-Taks are located mainly in tropical waters.
Average Intelligence
Kraak-Taks usually have a medium average intelligence level
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Kraak-Taks, through their antennae, have the ability to perceive vibrations travelling through water. They can also detect the presence of many types of chemichals with those organs.

Kraak-Taks are named after the noise they make when their shells break after their first exuvia
