Hobgoblins are a defect of the
Blood Curse that creates a larger
Goblin that's more intellectually capable. They seem to live forever as they are fairly rare and have no recorded instance of dying from old age. The first Hobgoblin is rumored to reside somewhere within the Unclaimed Territories in the Southwest of
Lind. There are tales of a city of Hobgoblins, though the existence of the first Hobgoblin and the city have never been confirmed by anyone, besides the Goblins.
Any time a Goblin is with child, there are great feasts and festivals while the
Moons of Lindorwyn are visible in hopes that it will become a Hobgoblin. Whenever a Goblin gives birth to Hobgoblin, the tribe packs up all their belongings and begin a journey to the Unclaimed Territories from wherever they are in Lind to take the Hobgoblin to the rumored city. This is done for natural reasons (i.e. birds migrating), rather than as some other underlying symbolic meaning. The Hobgoblins are also naturally drawn to the location and are typically still very small children when they arrive. These events mainly take place nearest to the
Cresting: Lunar Zenith and never during winter. Afterwards, the Goblins return to their original home or just begin building a new one.
Little is known about the rumored Hobgoblin city, how it operates, or how their society functions. However, Hobgoblins that are lost during their migrations are able to function in other societies. Often, they are regarded as outsiders which lend them towards labor intensive or shady professions such as haulers, miners, mercenaries, body guards, etc. Others just become hermits,
Druids, or
Wizards practicing their crafts in isolation.
Many prefer this civilized life, but some are still enticed towards the fabled city in the West.
Basic Information
Tall, lanky, humanoid Goblins. Can sometimes be mistaken for a slim bald Orc.
No known instances of Hobgoblin reproduction. Only created by chance through Goblin reproduction.
Fully adult around 10 years of age. Believed to live forever. They become visually older over centuries. Typically they'll start with bright green, yellow, or brown skin that dulls over time becoming grey or even black. The oldest Hobgoblins are said to barely resemble a humanoid creature, but still seem to retain a mental capacity similar to an elderly
Human. It is more common that a Hobgoblin will die from an external source (disease, wounds, etc.) than ever grow to such an age, but it has been recorded as happening.
Can survive in almost all habitats, but tend to stay out of the sun as much as possible since it causes their skin to age visually at a quicker rate.
Additional Information
In regular societies they are typically loners with a small circle of people that are friendly with them. There is no verified settlement of Hobgoblins.
Looks like long-faced stub-nosed Goblins.
Civilization and Culture
Their original names are a combination of their Goblin parent's names. Often made to sound as similar to "civilized" society as possible. Typically consisting of a first and last name which can take the tribe's entire migration to think about and agree upon. An example would be "Lebez Meld" deriving from his Goblin parents Leb (father) and Ezmelda (mother). Since Hobgoblin's names are a combination of masculine and feminine Goblin names, there is no gender consideration when naming.
A feeling of belonging is what most Hobgoblins seek. Anything or anyone that exudes a sense of belonging would be beautiful to a Hobgoblin such as a guild faction or religious organization. Cosmetically, they are most concerned with staying out of the sun in order to appear more humanoid and thus, be more accepted into society.
Just a small trustworthy group of people that won't "stab them in the back" or try to take advantage of them.
Hobgoblins naturally live forever.
There's a Hobgoblin city in The Unclaimed Territories.
Hobgoblins are special in Goblin society. Not to the point of being worshipped or ascending above a mortal status, but they are held in high esteem and are taken care of during the short period of migration with the Goblin tribe.
