Baratrum

God of Gehenna Baratrum

Baratrum is the God of Gehenna, twin brother of Caelum, and youngest child of Teho. Baratrum spent most of his life in the shadow of his brother Caelum. While some may have resented their siblings for this, Baratrum actually looked up to Caelum and wanted to be just like him.   For the first few hundred years of their lives, Baratrum and Caelum were under the mentorship of their older siblings. Caelum's training came naturally, while Baratrum struggled constantly with his trials. Baratrum constantly proved to be weaker, slower, and brash compared to his brother. To make up for his shortcomings, Baratrum would spend all of his free time training and perfecting his skills. He may have lacked the raw talent of his brother, but he would more than make up for this in his studies.   By the time their mentorship was over the twins proved to be of equal strength and skill. The two Gods set out and traveled Levan. They lacked purpose, but at least they had each other. As they spent the centuries exploring Levan the two brothers grew closer and soon became inseparable. Countless years were spent exploring the world where they ran into new peoples, Gods, and even dangerous beasts. On more than one occasion the brothers would find themselves face to face with the corruption of the Void and would help Locus and the Guardians purify the corruption.   When they Years of Strife began the two brothers made an oath to each other. They both promised to never fight over worshippers and whenever possible stop fights between Gods that were fighting over worshippers. This pact held strong throughout the early days of the Years of Strife. The twins traveled Levan stopping fights and ending wars whenever possible. If they failed to mediate a war they would take the warring Gods to their mother where they would stand trial for their crimes. This system worked for many years until the two brothers attempted to break up a fight between Lyra and Quies.   Caelum was always fond of Lyra and wanted to support her in the war rather than stopping the fight altogether. Baratrum was shocked and betrayed by his brother's decision, believing that his brother was choosing Lyra over him. Baratrum pleaded with Caelum to reconsider what he was doing, but Caelum refused to listen and went to war against Quies. During the battle, Baratrum tried once more to break up the fight when Caelum began to duel Quies. Baratrum pleaded with his brother, reminding him of the oath they made to each other. Just as it seemed as though Baratrum had talked him out of the fight they heard Lyra's screams. While the brothers were talking Quies disappeared into the battlefield and ambushed Lyra, stabbing her. Caelum rushed Quies knocking the God away from Lyra's body. Baratrum tried to save Quies by stepping between the Gods but was pushed aside by Caelum, sending him flying away. As Baratrum got up he watched as his brother pulled his blade out of Quies's now lifeless body. Caelum then ran over to Lyra, attempting to treat the wounded God. With a heavy heart, Baratrum drew his sword and began making his way over to his brother. Baratrum used the pommel of his blade to knock his brother out, dragging Caelum's unconscious body to their mother to stand trial for his crimes.   As Baratrum made his way home he came into contact with some other Gods and Goddess who he employed to help bring his brother to trial. He sent the two Goddesses Amos and Libi to help Lyra who was still wounded on the battlefield. Durin this time he also met with Sined and Nemutis two powerful Gods who agreed to help Baratrum escort Caelum back. When they made it back to Teho Caelum was forced to stand trial for his crimes of oathbreaking and murder. Teho was forced to make the most difficult decision of her life that day. On one hand, Caelum was guilty of his crimes and needed to be punished, but on the other hand, Teho needed Caelum and Baratrum back on the field breaking up fights. Teho decided to postpone punishment until the Years of Strife had died down and Caelum was no longer needed.   Baratrum had been betrayed once more, but this time by his mother. He refused to work with Caelum again, but would continue breaking up fights throughout Levan. As the Years of Blood began to die down Baratrum was able to focus more of his time and efforts on different projects. Baratrum realized that Levan had become too crowded and if the Gods wanted to continue to create things they would need a new realm to do so. The idea to create Gehenna was born. Baratrum saw Gehenna as a place for the Gods to start a new. He also believed that Gehenna could serve as a home for the Gods and Goddess so they would no longer have to live in Levan. He hoped this move would provide more peace and stability to the worlds. As he was working on Gehenna, Caelum got word of what he was doing. Not wanting to be outdone by his brother Caelum began creating his own new world as well. Once again the brothers were competitors, only this time it lacked their brotherly love.   Both brothers presented their creations to their mother hoping to win her affection. Caelum's world was much smaller and simpler but was more stable and less prone to corruption. Baratrum's world was massive and unlike anything ever seen before, but was unfortunately riddled with corruption from the Void. Teho would ultimately decide to live in Caelum's safer option with most of the other Gods following her. A few Gods decided to join Baratrum in Gehenna, but the majority of the Gods chose the Aether.   For the next 500 years, Baratrum spent his time secluded in Gehenna creating thousands of new beings. Baratrum would create a new group of Gods known as the Nekonor, his own version of the Aethoral. Baratrum also created hideous monsters and terrifying new races. While locked away in his unstable world, Baratrum's mind and body started becoming corrupted by the Void. The God became paranoid and unstable, breaking into fits of rage for seemingly no reason. It was during this time that Baratrum came to the decision that he deserved better. All of his life he had been betrayed and downtrodden, and he would no longer stand for this. He began devising a plan to take what should rightfully be his, a seat alongside Teho.   With the help of his allies and creations, Baratrum launched a massive attack against the other Gods. This war would take place throughout Levan and claim countless lives, toppling kingdoms and empires throughout the world. During the early years of the war, Baratrum and the Nekonor achieved many initial successes, driving most of the mortals into central Levan. Baratrum's ultimate goal was to make it to one of the many Aether Gates throughout Levan, these Gates would allow him to travel to the Aether where he could come face to face with his enemies. One by one the Gods sealed off these Gates until only one remained, the Patron's Gate. Teho and Caelum were faced with a difficult decision, if they closed the Gate they would be safe from Baratrum's invasion but they could never travel back to Levan. Caelum and the Aethoral decided to keep the Patron's Gate open and use it as their point of counter-attack. Baratrum predicted this move and allowed his armies to be pushed back by the counter-attacking Aethoral, as he and his most powerful warriors hid out of sight.   As the Aethoral pushed Baratrum's invading armies back out of Levan, Baratrum made his move. Baratrum and his companions snuck into the Aether unnoticed where they came face to face with Teho. Baratrum and his companions did battle against the Goddess but were ultimately no match for her power, and one by one they were defeated until it was just Baratrum. At this moment Baratrum revealed his true motives to Teho, telling the Goddess that this war was not a simple power grab for himself, but had a more important impact that none of the Gods had suspected. Baratrum then embraced his mother as they were both banished to the Void, never to be seen again.
