Wasteland Watchers

Wasteland Watchers are a division of the Leland Confederacy military responsible for guarding Leland's northern border and preventing unsuspecting tourists from wandering into The Wasteland.

History

Queendom Era

Following The Great Invasion, Queen Carina Ahyen ordered the building of a wall along the border north of the Ganuiles Mountains. For three centuries it was considered an honor to be sent to a post on the wall, but as memories of the war began to fade into history and the fears of a second invasion faded with them, it became less and less of a point of pride and more considered a punishment post. In the later years of the queendom, funding began to be pulled to serve the crown's own military interests and the wall itself was not properly upkept, leading to collapses in some places along the wall.

Leland Confederacy

The leaders of the new country saw more threats to the Confederacy from the inside rather than from the north, so the wall was initially ignored. Once the provinces had officially come together as one and secured any areas of resistance, consideration was given to outward defense despite not having contact with civilizations from outside the Leland Peninsula in almost a millennium. It was decided not to rebuild the wall but maintain the remaining sections and reestablish watch posts along the border. The posts are manned by soldiers from every province, but primarily the northern provinces Porcanda, Irocra, and Vinato. These days the Wasteland Watchers spend more time protecting tourists from accidentally wandering into the Wasteland than they do watching for signs of danger coming from the north.

The Job

Training

To be assigned to the northern border, a recruit must successfully go through basic military training. There is then a specific training for those who will be stationed at the wall as it is like no other post in Leland.

Career Progression

Soldiers of all ranks are stationed at the wall, so it is possible to climb the ranks while stationed there, but most choose to take another post when it is offered.

Salary

Wasteland Watchers receive the standard rate of pay for all soldiers in the Leland military.

Danger

The border is not a terribly exciting post, save those places with bandit activity. There is little danger to the Wasteland Watchers so long as they don't wander into the Wasteland where they may be poisoned by the few plant and animal species that call it home or be captured by what are believed to be the spirits of the Rezuslic haunting the mists.

Perception

Southern Leland

South of the Ganuilles, the northern border is considered a place to send the incompetent and, as such, to be sent there can damage a soldier's reputation.

Northern Villages

The villages at the northern border have slightly more respect for the post than the rest of Leland. Villagers depend on the Wasteland Watchers to keep tourists from doing stupid things like wandering into the Wasteland and stopping bandits along the roads between villages. They appreciate the soldiers being stationed so far from home and generally treat them well so long as they don't cause a ruckus of their own.
