Banreah Burial Forest

The Banreah Burial Forest is a burial garden located in Banreah. It is thought to be the largest burial garden in Leland.

A Cesnockwe Tradition

A city known as the southern heart of Cesland, the major religion of the area is Cansonism. Cansonist burial traditions involve burning the body and using the ashes to plant new life. Ashes are mixed with soil in biodegradable "coffins" in which vegetation is planted and then buried in the ground. In the earliest days of Banreah it was decided that the settlement's burial garden would be a forest, though as Banreah grew that would change.

Spread

Even as Banreah grew, the burial forest remained outside the city. This required the burial forest to expand outward as well, swallowing up what was formerly farm land. In the interest of conserving farmland in order to support the city, the choice was made shortly after the fall of the queendom to transition to other forms of vegetation including shrubs and perennial flowers.   Over the years, some of the oldest trees succumbed to the elements. Some of the now-free space was replanted, but a plot of land nearest to the city was dedicated to a monument with a list of names of those whose ashes were buried there.

A Bloody History

What sets the Banreah Burial Forest apart from a normal burial garden is the sheer density of the trees planted there. Banreah's bloody past is to blame for this. During the queendom period, the city was infamous for the Golden Duels that bloodied its streets. This was especially so in last century of the period. The need to handle the number of bodies produced by these duels in addition to the natural course of death led the caretakers of the garden to ignore spacing guidelines and simply plant trees where they determined there was room. This area is referred to as the dark forest and is said to be haunted by the energy of those who fell victim to duels.
