Introduction to Leitoria

Leitoria is a dieselpunk fantasy setting within a vast primordial world.

The planet of Leitoria is incredibly ancient and has seen the rise and fall of many great civilizations. Humans, the world's only current inhabitants, have only existed for a fraction of its history. Nearly two thousand years ago, they overthrew the Archdemons that had enslaved them for a thousand years and spread across the continents to begin new lives. Although they have made significant advancements in science and technology, they still wage a constant war for survival against both the aberrations of the Abyss and the natural world around them.

The World of Leitoria

Cosmology

The universe is separated between two planes: the natural world and the Abyss.

The natural world holds the planet of Leitoria: one of six planets orbiting a single sun. It has a single moon and a ring of dust and ice that occasionally fall in the form of meteorites.

The Abyss is a chaotic and semi-sentient metaphysical plane of dreams and illusions. Its appearance and nature shift on a whim, but it often appears as a dark void filled with distant lights. Although it is trapped outside the bounds of reality, the Abyss can still feed on the emotions of the living through its demonic children.

The Abyss is the source of the Archdemons, aberrations, and magic.

Magic

Magic is a dangerous art that is well known but not widely practiced. Abyssal Magic comes in two main forms: symbolic magic and innate magic.

Symbolic magic is practiced through symbols and rituals, and its effects are often unpredictable. Its chaotic and destructive effects have caused it to be labeled a dark form of magic.

Innate magic takes the form of unique individual abilities possessed by witches. Anyone can unlock their innate magic, but doing causes abyssal corruption to slowly spread throughout their body.

A few rare non-abyssal magics exist like pyromancy and the lost druidic elemental magic, and their origins are widely debated.

Divines

The gods of Leitoria are mostly absent, or perhaps never existed in the first place. Various religions flourish in the world, but the existence of their deities have never been proven.

However, there are a few god-like beings that walk Leitoria. Although their powers have been weakened, the Archdemons of the Ivory Court are very real.

Technology

Leitoria has fully entered an age of diesel technology. Trains and steel ships are the dominant forms of transportation, and major cities are filled with industrial infrastructure.

New innovations such as portable radios, mechanical prosthetic limbs, and electric lights have become widespread.

The Known Continents

Pelatoria ("Home Land") is the birthplace of human civilization and the most heavily populated of the three. Despite being the most heavily populated of the three, many areas of the continent are still wild and untamed.

Quentoria ("Northern Land") is a small and eternally frozen continent just to the north of Pelatoria. Very few have managed to survive the harsh icy landscape.

Anithtoria ("Eastern Land") is a distant southeastern continent that has only recently been discovered. Although a few colonies have been established along the coast, the rest of the land is unexplored.

Tone

Leitoria is a primarily Graydim world.

For many people, the world is harsh and unforgiving. Governments can be struggling or controlling, and many organizations only act in their own self interest. Demons prey on the flesh and fears of mortals, and nature itself often seems intent on smothering out civilization.

However, there are always people trying to change the world for the better. They may not always succeed, but they'll give it their best shot.

Ancient Civilizations

Humans are the world's current inhabitants, but they were far from the first. Many lost civilizations have risen and fallen long before humans ever appeared on the planet.

  • The titans were massive stone giants. Many believe that they were the first civilization in Leitoria or even the planet's creators.
  • The matolians were towering crustacean-like humanoids who built enormous citadels. They discovered a way to create sentient life in the form of golems, but their methods have been lost to time.
  • The chikikans were a race of mothfolk who were highly sensitive to sunlight and built their entire civilization in vast underground chasms.
  • The hahpians were a highly advanced civilization who developed self-sustaining cities and flying ships. Scientists are still trying to discover the power source of this technology so that it can be used again.
  • The tseketsians were plantfolk who designed forests and lakes like humans design cities. Evidence of their meticulously crafted natural wonders can still be seen today
